Ricky Stuart sidled up to Nathan Gardner at training on Tuesday, looked him directly in the eye and asked: "So, do you think you're ready to play first grade?"
Five seconds later the Sharks had anointed their third fullback of the season.
Gardner is one of two new faces in the team to meet Penrith in Sunday's Heritage Round clash with the Panthers at Toyota Stadium.
Adam Cuthbertson has won a bench spot after a fortnight in the NSW Cup.
But it's Gardner's selection that caught most by surprise – including the man himself.
"My goal this year was to play at least one NRL game but I was still very shocked when Ricky told me," Gardner said.
"He came up to me during the session and asked me if I thought I was ready and I said 'yeah, I think I am'."
"He then sat everyone down to read out the squad and called out my name, so I was pretty stoked."
"The boys gave me a bit of a clap and wished me well."
Stuart brought Gardner over from Parramatta during the off-season and has closely watched his progress in the Toyota Cup.
The speedy No.1 has been in terrific form in the under-20s, leading the Cronulla try-scorers' list and helping the Sharks hover just inside the top eight.
Now he gets his opportunity in top company.
"I'm expecting it to be a lot faster and tougher than Toyota Cup but I'm really ready for the challenge," he said.
"I feel like I've worked hard in the off-season and the early part of this season and am prepared for the step up."
"I played in the trials and that gave me a bit of a feel for it but obviously this is the real thing and will be a lot tougher."
"It's good that my first game is at home…having the crowd behind me will make things a lot easier."
Cronulla and Penrith both entered the premiership together in 1967, building up a healthy rivalry over the ensuing 43 years.
The Sharks, coming off the bye, go into Sunday's match desperate to restore some credibility after a disappointing last-up loss to St George Illawarra.
