Non origin players get a lot less hype for big chunks of the year, and less big games to shine in during NRL season
Right, got you. Lost the thread in between posts!
Yep, I hear you. SOO is the top tier nation, everything else is second tier at best

Yep, and even more so with no mid season tests to flip any focus onto non-SOO players.

I think if they existed as James Hughes the half for Qld and Junior Munster from NZ the amount each is spoken about flips

Hughes also keeps his head down a bit more, Munster from the camp of any publicity is good publicity

Going a bit off topic here.

But how Ricky Stuart is rated so highly as a coach just baffles me. Most overrated coach in history imo.

I find him completely unlikeable, but you can't really deny that he gets the raiders punching above their weight. More than most coaches can claim.

Yeah plus you look at the Raiders in NSW Cup and Flegg, and the signs are positive for them.

I'm pretty sure the Sharks Academy started up while he was coach (2008-2009)?

Maybe he would be more suited to a "coaching director" role.

I'm in the minority on this one, I like Sticky.
Yeah, I like him too.

Raiders have probably over achieved since he’s been there.

I don’t mean they didn’t deserve it, but when you look at their players there is a severe lack of star power in their line up.

They made the GF and the two biggest names were Wighton and Papali’i.

Aidan Sezer was Wighton’s half partner ffs!

Worst GF halves pairing since Robson and Mortimer for the eels V storm 2009.

I can’t see anyone else doing what Ricky has done in Canberra with the players they’ve had… ever.

Funny that that's a criticism yet we also have people in here saying we should sign him

Ricky has ebbed and flowed a bit with them - done just enough to hold his job a few times. Lucky he can sell the English on the weather though I think, if not for them he might be gone.

There 2019 team was stacked with talent.

They had the rep/international players

John Bateman
Joseph Tapnie
Jack Wighton
Elliot Whitehead
Josh Hogdson
Josh Pappali
Jordan Rapana
Nick Cotric
Charnze Nicol-Klokstad

Throw in peak form Joey Lueilua and Jarrod Crocker.

They’ve underachieved massively since Stuart arrived.

That’s a lot of talent, but they’re all honest hard workers with a bit of go. No real x-factors bedsides Papali’i.

They’re much like us before we got Nicho, and still are to an extent… no superstars, just a well rounded football team…

Ricky knows what he is doing and results speak for themselves. We can’t beat them lol.

Hodgson was a top 3 hooker in the game and Wighton won a Dally M. That’s two pretty good players.

Plenty of players going well above average at the time in that list
Wouldn’t want it now admittedly but I do t think it’s as grim as you’re portraying @Tatus

I didn’t think I was portraying it as grim. I felt I was giving compliment to Ricky and his ability to get the most out of honest toilers.

They deff weren’t short for “talent,” but I feel like I’m stating the obvious when I say those players being mentioned in a high regard are a result of that structure and coaching/culture sticky has been able to implement.

To say they have under achieved, while using the talent sticky has produced as an example of why they have under achieved seems stupid to me.

Some like Hodgson and Bateman came as high level signings so plenty of those guys were above honest toilet level (typo but I’m leaving it). Raiders Bateman didn’t just benefit from Ricky system.

For me how much they have achieved has fluctuated. Under over and about right - he has been there a long time afterall.

I do wonder where they’d be at if they didn’t have such a good line of talent from UK (maybe to Ricky’s credit, I’m not sure)
Ricky has also shown at other clubs he can find success, keeping teams successful has tended to be a bit more of an issue
