Mick Ennis admits it might sound naive but the supplements saga that embroiled his NRL club Cronulla and devastated Essendon in the AFL won't stop him following support staff orders without question.

Ennis said the Sharks had finally put the issue behind them despite old wounds threatening to be re-opened by the bombshell dropped on Tuesday on the Bombers.

However, Ennis baulked when asked whether players were responsible for what they put in their bodies.

Ennis said he would continue to trust support staff, no questions asked, despite WADA admitting the Bombers' lack of curiosity about their supplements regime contributed to their lengthy bans.

"Regardless of everything that has gone on ... throughout my whole career and still to this day when I go to training, the people that the club employ, as a player, I put my trust in those guys," Ennis told Sky Sports Radio.

"Some people may call it naive but it is what we do as professional athletes.

"You come to your workplace and those people ... try and get each player to perform at their best throughout that coming season.

"Throughout my career, I have put trust in those people and have not had any problems.

"I can't really fault that process, to be honest."

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld WADA's appeal against 34 current and former Bombers after the AFL anti-doping tribunal had cleared them last year of charges.

CAS handed down two-year bans, backdated only by 12 months.

It meant 12 current Essendon players and five at other clubs were suspended for the entire 2016 AFL season.

In contrast, in August 2014, 12 past and current Sharks players served a three-game NRL ban when they were hit by a 12-month backdated suspension for 2011 breaches of the game's anti-doping rules.

Ennis - who arrived at the Sharks in 2015 - said his club had moved on from the saga.

"By the time I had arrived at Cronulla, everything was in place to move on - we have certainly done that," he said.

"Obviously, it was very disappointing what happened down at Essendon yesterday.

"In terms of the Sharks, I won't be going there to bring up anything that happened in the past when it is unnecessary.

"It was a private matter for a lot of those guys."

I seriously believe we at least have to try Barba at FB this season and the vast majority of the 2016 team thread appears to agree with this.

I just can't see why anyone would prefer anything else?
Yep, I'm happy for Holmes to stay on the wing for this season and have stints at fullback. Not a fan of Bird to fullback at all TBH.

Barba could seriously bring us to another level.

Channel 9 showed Michael Ennis at the cricket today sitting among the Aussie players. Looked like was enjoying himself, good on him.
Michael Clarke, who was commentating at the time then talked up the Sharks chances this year, was good to hear.

CRONULLA’S veteran hooker, Michael Ennis, says the James Maloney effect on the squad through the pre-season training period has been “fantastic”.

The Sharks have still never won a premiership, so the more players with premiership experience that they can get into their squad the better. Maloney won a premiership with Sydney Roosters in 2013 and Ennis says the club’s new five-eighth has the confidence that comes with being a big-game winner.

“Jimmy has been fantastic, to be honest,” Ennis says.

“There’s a range of different things which people who know a bit about football will know he brings to our team, the likes of his communication in terms of organisation as a half does these days.

“Also, his kicking game is as good as any and his goal-kicking is certainly a huge bonus since we’ve lost Michael Gordon, but more importantly the experience of winning a premiership and playing Origin games.

“That in itself adds a weight in value, especially with Jimmy teaming up with somebody who I think is a real kid on the rise in (halfback) Chad Townsend.”

Yes I agree ,Ennis has been without doubt one of the best buys we have made in a long time. I wish him well for 2016 and hope he has another stand out year in 2016.

Also hope him and Jimmy Malone can work together ,giving us a lot more options, in attack we do have some noted ball , runners Taga, Benny Baba,Wade, Birdy Val Holmes

I'd be more than happy for ME to hang around a few more years!
Great on field leader.

ENNIS HAS NO CLAUSE FOR CONCERN

Cronulla are poised to activate an option in their favour which will see Michael Ennis stay in the Shire for another season.

Having tied down youngsters Jack Bird (end of 2017), Valentine Holmes (end of 2017) and Ricky Leutele (end of 2018), the club will now turn their attention to some of their more experienced men.

Foxsports.com.au understands Cronulla plan to take up their option to keep Ennis and will continue discussions with the 31-year-old over whether they extend his stay a further season.

“I’ve spoken to (coach Shane Flanagan) — we’ve had a really good relationship for a fair few years now,” Ennis told foxsports.com.au.

“I originally signed a two-year contract with an option for a third year.

“We’ve spoken about taking up that third year. Obviously (the club’s) priority was to tie down Jack (Bird) and getting his stuff sorted.

“We’ll work something out in due course. I certainly feel there’s plenty of footy left in me and definitely keen to play on.”

Entering his 14th season in the NRL, Ennis revealed he has spoken to former Roosters star Anthony Minichiello about retirement but said he’s yet to get the feeling his time is up.

Ennis said he “hasn’t put a time frame” on how long he will stay playing the game although he believes he’s capable of mixing it at the top level until at least the end of 2018.

“At this stage (retirement’s) not in the forefront of my mind,” he said.

“I certainly feel like I definitely have two years of footy left in me for sure.”

Love Ennis but there's no rush to get this done.

Disagree, obviously we want to keep him another year, well imo it's no brainer. So the sooner we know we have him for 2017 or further so we can plan ahead both from a positional standpoint i.e. we don't need a hooker for abit longer and can keep bringing up the Brailey's. And from a financial standpoint and what cap space we have available to lock in Holmes et al.

Fair points but I think we need to be ruthless in these types of situations like other clubs. I love Ennis but if there's a chance of picking up a younger gun hooker we need to act on it rather than hoping there is someone available or someone already on our roster works out for 2018.

Plus

He had a great season last year and always plays well year in year out, so there is no reason he won't continue on his good form. Plus if he is with us when retirement comes around, we are in pole position to keep him on as coaching staff.
I reckon he would make a fantastic coach. He is very articulate and I think he reads the game exceptionally well.

Yes he brings a lot of football experience and know how. Was without doubt a stand out for us last year possibly some of the best footy he has played.

He is good news for this club.

Remember the uproar amongst Easts fans when they decided not to re-sign Ricketson? Sometimes you have to be cruel to be successful.

I love Ennis, but we can't hold onto guys out of loyalty or because he's a fan favourite.

Our aging squad will require us to let some experienced guys go and chase guys in the middle of their careers. eg Segy and Cordner
