So i was in the big jersey store in canberra yesterday. they have an online website too. also the "official" retailer for the raiders.
more merch than you can poke a stick at. every team is there.
obviously our jerseys arent going to be ready yet due to the sponsorship and blah blah and thats a whole other issue.
anyway.
have you guys ever noticed how dead**** ordinary the generic merch looks?
like, the stuff made by the league. not ISC or Blades or Nike whatever. but the fan merch. its bloody ordinary. they use the same template and just shove the colours in regardless of how it looks. some clubs look alright but others just awful.
the training gear is pretty good at all clubs but its all ads.
and then theres the jerseys. our sponsor who we thought we had for 2 years is no longer the sponsor. so straight away the kit you bought in july is dated. souths have a giant billboard on the front of their jersey. the star. who wants to ****ing wear that? not my old man (who still wears his 1999 downtow duty free jersey with the NRL bomb logo with black tape over it)
and these things are 150 bucks. thats big money for the average punter.
are the clubs able to do their own merch or is it only done by the jersey manufacturer or the league? ive heard that the clubs dont actually won the logos or some crap like that is that part of the issue?
i was also wondering how feasible this would be at club or code level.
The NRL fan jersey.
you take the jersey design (ie, our hoops jersey)
with the embroided badges on it so it isnt totally best and less.
but heres the kicker. player names and numbers on the back.
works in every sport in the world. #23 Jordan or #21 Sanders, #12 Brady. Iconic jerseys. #24 Bryan etc, #33 Bird.
every player on the squad available. obviously #6 Carney, #13 Gallen etc would be big sellers. #1 Barba. # 1 Inglis etc. you could even have customisable name and number. #69 Jigsaw or # 21 Fitz etc. whatever.
and these jerseys be sold for 100 bucks. not 150. same fabric, no sponsorship on it for the purists but the added thing of "this is my favourite player"
not only that, you could have old players as well. #3 Ettingshausen, #3 Rogers, #13 Clyde far. anyone.
Are the clubs/league allowed to use the players names from eras gone by? would this be something that has to be brought to the RLPA?
i mean, if they revenue shared it and a portion of all the jersey sales went to the players thatw ould be pretty great.
this would probably undercut the revenue from the official jerseys. i dont know. but i think maybe if the fans had a secondary option rather than "well ill buy this sponsor endorsed product and itll be out of date in 2 years"
i mean, the players go out of date too, but i have cherished memories of watching the likes of ET and Peachey etc. i think this would be pretty popular.
reckon it would work?
