Could also be that the NRL is "posturing" in the lead up to the new TV rights negotiations.
I'd imaging negotiations would take some time so the NRL want to plant the seed, putting the hebegebes up the Fox and nine execututives in making them think that the NRL may actually run with this.
The "Pay up or we run it ourselves and you miss out" strategy!

Yeah, that article reminds me a lot of the stories player managers put out trying to get a better deal “we are leaving our options open atm because he misses home and want to win a premiership”

The NRL is kidding themselves if they think they'd get the same exposure, at this stage anyway.

Where are they going to get their money from? That last broadcast deal did a fair bit for the game. Will they be going to he video ref more and more to get that sponsor money?

I'd prefer the NRL kept the games to the experts.

As much as I hate what Ch 9's do with their broadcast, you cant really fault the actual game coverage. They have some of the best cameraman and directors in Australia.

NRL would be mad to try and take over something like this.

Instead they should let every team have a bare bones camera crew follow them all season, then at the end of the year, if that team is premiers, they can put together one of those small documentaries like NFL Films do and you watch before some games.

Channel 9 are horrible. I never watch them directly, but when I watch the Fox broadcast of their games (where I believe 9 control the cameras) there is a noticeable drop in quality. The camera men act like they don't even like League. They'll just cut to showing the bench or whatever. You can just imagine Rabs and Gus are going on about a moustache or haircut so the camera is focused there. Meanwhile there's a ****ing game on guys...

Don't watch much Fox so I can't compare.

Yeah they do cut to some random ****, but that's exactaly what you said, they're taking directions from the commentary. Cut out that rubbish and they know what they're doing

The problem is that the broadcasters have too much control over the sport, an analogue to editorial decisions are made. Then they go and extract surplus value out of the product by creating fake controversy and a culture that is focused on controversy as entertainment. The product itself then becomes more than just what happens on the field. Over time this extracts revenue from the NRL's long term reputation to be benefit of the broadcasters (only).

Strategically the NRL need to dump these legacy organisations. FTA and Foxtel will not exist in their current format for very long anyway.

The actual logistics of filming, producing etc can still be outsourced to capable organisations.

I think I wasn't clear.

I'm happy for Ch 9 or Foxtel to lose the rights, don't have a problem in the world of that happening.

I just don't want the crews that make up the technical side of the telecast to be lost, and for the NRL to take over it half arsed and stupidly under qualified
