NRL: Manly Sea Eeagles coach Des Hasler could be sacked tonight as Canterbury Bulldogs target young star Kieran Foran
Dean Ritchie and Paul Kent
The Daily Telegraph
9th of November, 2011

THE crisis continues. Des Hasler could be sacked as early as tonight amid news that superstar five-eighth Kieran Foran is the next Sea Eagle poised to defect to Canterbury.

The Bulldogs will target Foran for 2013 - the same season current Canterbury five-eighth Kris Keating comes off contract.

And it can also be revealed that Foran's family want him to play his entire career under Hasler. Foran has a get-out clause at Manly should Hasler leave but intends to remain at Brookvale next season before deciding his long-term future.

But it's understood that the board could end Hasler's contract at a meeting tonight.

Board members are also furious that Hasler has banned them from travelling with and staying in the team hotel for next year's World Club Challenge in the UK.

Already the Bulldogs have held top-level internal discussions about Foran.

With additional money through the NRL broadcasting deal in 2013, Canterbury will spend $1.8 million on him.

It's the latest blow to the premiers, who have already lost several staff members, including scouting director Noel Cleal.
In more bad news for the club yesterday:

RISING forward Darcy Lussick has been linked to several clubs, including Parramatta.

EXPERT video analyst, Will Badel, a key contributor in Manly's premiership win and also used by Ricky Stuart in State of Origin this year, appears ready to leave Manly. Several clubs are chasing Badel, including the Dogs.

Even if sacked by Manly before the start of next season, it's unlikely Hasler would coach Canterbury in 2012.

Hasler would allow Jim Dymock to coach but shift to Belmore in a consultancy and advisory role before taking over the top job in 2013.

Foran, 21, is in England representing New Zealand at halfback in the Four Nations.

This year, Foran and halfback Daly Cherry-Evans combined to shock rugby league by manoeuvring Manly to the NRL title.

Manly's off-season has been terrible since the board's bumbling negotiations with Hasler and COO David Perry terminating 40-year Manly man Peters.

Fans are filthy at Bob Reilly, the Leagues Club and football club chairman who holds the balance of power, over the on-going bungles. Reilly has been under intense pressure to stand down but is ignoring calls from diehard fans.

Perry has presided over a disaster since he took over with players and some coaching staff refusing to speak with him. Should Foran leave, he would reunite with former Sea Eagle Trent Hodkinson at the Canterbury scrum base.

There were also rumours yesterday that Brett Stewart, who also has a get-out clause, could leave Manly but Canterbury has not discussed the former Test fullback.

I thought this deserved its own thread because things are getting dire up there in Hartleyland.

Does it remind anyone else of the kind of disaster that occurred here when Anderson took over? Great seasons the year before, then a controversial coaching change and a mass exodus of the Club's best players coupled with a poorly run club from a financial perspective.

What does everyone think of Manly's prospects for the next few years? I'm seeing a tough period ahead... and they're not helped by the fact that Brookie is such a dog of a ground. Are they beginning to look like a new target for the Relocationists?

The absolute irony would be if they had to go cap in hand to the North Sydney Bears to seek a bail out solution.

Hmmm... North Shore Bears & Central Coast Sea Eagles or perhaps the re-emergence of "The Northern Eagles"

Could be back on the cards. Must be some damaging infighting going on, to go from premiers to this in the space of a couple of months.

I'm just thankful the we have sorted almost all of our issues out, with what our current board have been doing along with the fans and sponsors, thats what makes us strong.
With us, it dosen't matter what they throw at us, as we are still standing.......the true battlers

My last post was a friendly dig at the media.......

This reminds me a little of the situation when Ricky left the Sharks. Remember the speculation about players leaving? While this sounds a bit deeper than that, I'm not getting too carried away until things happen. We've seen first hand how the media can run away with this kind of thing.

They seem to be in a weak position though. The strange thing is their over-achievement could be the thing that bites them in the bum.

Haha, you're right, it could happen... I think I could guess what the Bears' response would be too!

Also, none of this is anyone's fault but their own. From what's been published in the papers, they could have extended Hasler for another few years six months ago, but they squabbled over 50k. That's plenty of money, don't get me wrong, but if the Club was better run then it would be able to afford that kind of upgrade. And if the Board weren't so arrogant then they would have realised how important keeping Hasler was.

Internal bickering, fighting, arguments, etc.

It's the fans that suffer the most

Wow! Big news that's for sure. After watching the Finals series where Manly were never really troubled, I thought they could build a dynasty. They had the makings of one of the greatest teams in my time. Des was leading those players around with the perfect gameplan and they still hadn't seen the likes of Cherry-Evans, Foran, T.Williams etc reach their full potential yet. To be honest, I was getting a little scared thinking 'How the hell is anyone going to stop this team in years to come?'

How quickly it can all change though. First they lose Dessy, now possibly Foran? **** me this could become one of the biggest falls from grace in recent RL history.

Manly over the last 5 or so years have been a team that everyone should look up to and be proud of. They have been successful without needing to rape and poach from other teams. They have been successful without (as far as we know) cheating the cap or being owned by News Limited.

I hate them, but credit where credit is due. Their systems on presumably a lowish budget have produced results to die for.

On field, they are tough (if unskilled) in the forwards, with the perfect halves combination and fast skilful backs.

Other than the fact they are Manly, they really are something to admire. And on that note I think it's quite sad that a team with success like that can be decimated from the inside. What a ****ing joke seriously.

I agree absolutely Mark. Plus they play a great style of RL in my opinion- tough, aggressive and fast. But I put most of that down to Hasler and his staff rather than the Club admin.

Couldn't agree more with this post. They have such a simple system in place but it works so well. One thing I've always admired from Manly is that fact they score so many tries out wide. There wingers have always been quick and hug the sideline at all costs. Hasler had that team so well drilled/structured/focused it's not funny.

Yep that's the other thing, they managed to do it without being boring like St George / Melbourne etc.

Yeah the club admin is obviously ****.

Doesn't he work for the Dogs these days?

I think he is a Canterbury supporter now.
