Sharks after 'world's best players'
BY BRAD FORREST
16 Feb, 2011 04:00 AM

CRONULLA Sharks are building up a war chest with the aim of luring some of the world's best players to the club.
The Sharks refused last week to enter into any bidding for former Parramatta Eels Test star, Timana Tahu, despite remaining one of the few clubs who could afford to buy him under the salary cap.

The Sharks already have more than $200,000 to spend but by June that figure could effectively triple when contracts for 2012 are being prepared.

Coach Shane Flanagan has warned more than half his top squad that they are effectively playing for their future, with at least 15 of the top 30 players coming off contract this season.

Forest just seems to tell it how it is I think he actually takes care with his work and isn't a Gossip columnist like we see in the big rags.

I refuse to get excited about this, this article seems to be a "re hashed" article w/ slight or suttle changes to cetain words, it happens all the time.

Most recently at the end of last season when Damien Irvine was either being quoted in print or on radio getting interviewed saying the sharks were after some "big fish/ origin/ test players" & our prospects were looking good getting them over the line to the Sharks.

Reality was we got one player & that was Jeremy Smith who I was quite happy with, what gives me the s*#*s is we only got the one player when I (& I'm thinking others as well) were led to believe there was more than just Jeremy coming.

I am probably being paranoid but I believe the Sharks Club have a history of doing this (getting the fans excited believing things are happening with us getting some new gun players).

Again reality is we got J. Smith, W.Graham, C.Best & J.Williams as our "major" off season recruits. While I think our squad is stronger in 2011 than 2010 it pisses me off to think that the Sharks Club hierachy wont think that we the fans dont remember what they had us leading to believe when they told us we are right in there with a good chance as any club in securing some gun rep players.

I probably sound negative which I dont want to but as I said earlier it gives me the craps that we are being fed the same sort of thing year after year.

I would be so much happier if they had of just said late last yr we have so much money & with that money we are after or can afford one quality player with either origin or test experiance (J Smith) & the rest of our signings will be a good up & coming junior (Wade) & a couple of first grade experiance journey men (C Best & J Williams).

Just be honest Sharkies hierachy, we the fans would much prefer this.

Time will tell in the season leading up to 2012 whether or not any of these "world class players" will be arriving at the Sharks for the start of season 2012?

You have to remember that the media is who are hearing this stuff off not the club. I think that in reality (and i could be wrong) is that we were probably no chance of signing 3-4 big names because we were still a bit on the nose with an under performing team the past 2 years, financial problems (again all speculation in the media etc) you know the rest i am sure. A way to help spike market interest that we have the cash to sign some big names is to use the media. Unfortunately we never know if in fact we were acutally in the market for these type of players or we were simply not getting a shot at them in the first plce (hence Irvine/Flanno's quotes from the media). Take it all with a grain of salt!

I think the club last year has not gone and paid any of the players we have bought more than what they were worth, which we have done in the past, and Irvine in my opinion hasn't made to many glaring obvious mistakes since taking over. If the Development gets past, the perception of financial problems is close to being totally removed and hopefully we only see things printed in the media saying we have signed some great players for 2012 and beyond!!

I wouldn't be wanting to spread around the news about how much we are under the cap. With key re signings needing to be made. I d love to be snowdens manager hearing this.

Just for once can we keep our mouths shut and under promise and over deliver!

The leader is crap, utter crap. The only credible bit is the sports section - and thats because they are MAINLY just scores and facts. The leader as a whole, in my opinion, is a sad reflection of society and feelings of some (very loud) members of the Sutherland Shire. In saying that, it is the shires community news paper and would not want to see it go under (not that it is in any danger of doing so).

the above article states that the 200k we available in this years cap could effectively triple when 2012 contracts are done. could someone explain how it could triple i realise we could bring forward payments for some players contract for next year so i thought we could double it. but how could we triple it?
