THE Northern Pride have continued their outstanding recruiting history, landing the signature of former Cronulla Shark Lancen Joudo.
A former captain of the Sharks’ under-20s, Joudo has played three NRL games and was named in the New South Wales Cup team of the year.
A versatile player, Joudo can cover hooker, five-eighth and lock but with Mareeba product Jason Roos entrenched at No.9 for the Pride, the 21-year-old would most likely provide cover in the halves or at the back of the scrum.
Like Ryan Stig last year, Joudo will complete pre-season training with the North Queensland Cowboys until Christmas and join the Pride in 2011.
He will also provide cover for the departed Rod Griffin, and Joel Riethmuller if the Pride MVP is picked up by the Cowboys after his pre-season stint.
Joudo’s enthusiasm has already impressed Pride coach David Maiden, with the former Shark heading to Townsville a day after his signing with the Queensland Cup champions last week.
"It was a big carrot for him," Maiden said of the training stint with the
Cowboys.
The retirement of Chris Sheppard and departure of Stig has left the Pride thin in the halves and while Joudo could yet pull on the No.6 jersey, his versatility also impressed Maiden.
"We’re after a half more than anything but it wouldn’t hurt us to get some depth in the hooker position either," he said.
"We expect Roosy to play most of the minutes there and we’ve got Clint Amos as well, although he has work commitments which will prevent him from coming to Cairns every week.
"Also the possibility of losing Joel (to the Cowboys) means (Joudo) could play at No.13."
Maiden is keen on Joudo’s playing ability but is also aware of the character of the youngster.
While a development officer at Penrith, Maiden took an under-16 side, including Panthers junior Joudo, star centre Michael Jennings and half Luke Walsh to New Zealand.
"He’s keen, he’s a total professional," Maiden said.
Joudo’s signing means the Pride is unlikely to chase another half, despite Townsville product Nathaniel Bowman recently reneging on a deal to join the club
