He's doing really well for NYC, very good goal kicker and has a strong accurate boot on him. Size wise he's not small either, not huge but not making firsts won't be because he's too small. Plus he's got some growing to do.

Whether he's going to be a gun in first grade not sure. Realistically he is two years away from regular first grade imo with the odd games here and there to get his feet wet.

Nathan cleary is 19 , 92kgs and 182 cms tall. Kyle is 180cms tall and 85kgs. Kyle needs to put on a bit more size and he is ready to go.

And James Maloney is 178cm and 83kgs (according to Wiki)

He'll naturally put on more size as he gets older but his size won't be an issue.

What made Cleary ready ?

Neccessity

No idea, he didnt have half the season flanno jnr is having

It took all of these things to happen for Cleary to get a run.

1. Segyaro got released (so Wallace moved from 7 to 9)
2. Te Maire Martin got a season-ending injury
3. Jamie Soward played poorly and got dropped, then released before 30 June
4. Matt Moylan said he wasn't ready to play 5/8 yet
5. Peachey was tried at 6 and 9 and was OK but not ideal
6. Other part time options were tried in 9 so Wallace could return to 7, but these failed too
7. The Panthers won only 5 of their first 12 games

-

Ultimately Cleary getting called up was a last resort which they resisted for as long as possible. It was his performances after that which kept him there.

A comparable scenario for the Sharks this year would probably be season ending injuries to 6 players out of Maloney, Townsend, Bird, Paulo, Segyaro, Brailey, Clydsdale and Brown. If we have to lose all of those players for Flanagan to get a run I don't like what that would mean for our finals hopes.

Yeah you could say a similar thing with Brailey. As much hype as there was around him in the lower grades, he wouldn't be playing firsts if Ennis stuck around for another year or two.

He looks good, reminds me of Ash Taylor, but that might just be his build, shaved head and running style. . but you can tell he needs to grow into his body more before he is ready. The speed of first grade would smother him quite quick like most youngsters but abit more growing and power in the legs will benefit him more before his debut.

Wait till next year and let him take on a similar game coverage as Nu Brown's this year with a view to getting a good look in 2019.

Best thing about our NYC side is they play exactly the way our first grade side does. Very structured and disciplined in goal line defence so the players are learning their roles.

To be fair, Cleary was killing it in NYC. I watched a few of his games before the hype started and it was well deserved. He was tearing them apart

Yeah - this is true - but my point is that the club exhausted all of the other available options before throwing an 18yo in to first grade. Caution is a good thing with young halves. This is even more true for our team because of our ladder position.
