Well I was speaking from what I have seen not what I've read, so I can assure you that he is playing very well.

LESS than two years ago, Moranbah’s Josh Hannay was plying his trade on a suburban Sutherland footy paddock, training at Corea Road Oval for the lowly Gymea Gorillas.

One of North Queensland’s favourite sons had been reduced to a lower grade three-quarter after being cast adrift of the NRL.

Unwanted in first grade by the Cronulla Sharks after playing just three games for them, Hannay was on the outer despite an esteemed career which included 150 games for the North Queensland Cowboys, a grand final and a handful of State Origin appearances for Queensland.

But rather than wallow in self-pity, the former Miners back gritted his teeth and began to work his way back into the fold.

It’s a credit to the 29-year-old that he now stands on the brink of making his UK Super League debut for competition newcomers Celtic Crusaders.

After linking with the club in late 2007, Hannay and his team-mates have forged their way to the top tier of rugby league in Europe.

He is likely to be named in the starting line-up for their much-anticipated season opener this weekend against UK giant Leeds.

The Headingley contest is regarded as a mismatch of grand proportions with the Crusaders ranked 10-1 chances to win the match and 500-1 chances to win the premiership.

But their inaugural season in Super League provides Hannay with a chance to re-establish himself as a top-line player.

If he displays anything like the sort of form that saw him churn out almost 900 points for the Cowboys, then the Crusaders will consider him a bargain buy – if they don’t already.

Six Australian rugby league players face deportation from Great Britain following a UK Borders Agency probe into the validity of their visas.

Josh Hannay, Jace van Dijk, Tony Duggan, Damien Quinn, Mark Dalle Cort and Darren Mapp, all players with Celtic Crusaders, the Super League's newest club, have until September 7 to leave the UK after being told they were working in the country illegally.

Hannay has the highest profile of the players, having played for North Queensland Cowboys, Cronulla Sharks and Queensland.

Mapp played in the NRL for Brisbane Broncos, Canberra raiders and Cronulla Sharks.

"As the result of an intelligence-led investigation into possible immigration offences among players at Celtic Crusaders, we can confirm that six Australian nationals have been served with papers confirming that they are illegally present in the UK," the UK Border Agency said in a statement.

"We now expect these individuals to leave the country. If they refuse to do so voluntarily, we will enforce their removal.

"The players are prohibited from working in the UK with immediate effect."

The players, who cannot now work in Britain for 10 years, have been banned from playing with immediate effect.

The Crusaders have cancelled the contracts of the players.

All six are understood to have pleaded guilty to hiding their intention to play semi-professional and professional sport when they applied for holiday and student visas before the Welsh club rose from the national leagues.

"Celtic Crusaders have cooperated fully with the UK Border Agency's investigation and we will abide by their findings," Crusaders chief executive Mike Turner said.

"We are sorry to be losing players who have made a big contribution in making Celtic Crusaders a Super League club.

"This situation does, however, provide us with an ideal opportunity to give some Welsh youngsters valuable first-team action for our final three games of the season, starting this Saturday when we play Leeds Rhinos in Newport."

JOSH Hannay could be running out for the Mackay Cutters as early as next season after being ordered to leave the UK, where he has been playing in Super League.

Josh Hannay could be running out for the Mackay Cutters as early as next season.

FORMER State of Origin star Josh Hannay could be running around for the Mackay Cutters as early as next season after being ordered to leave the UK, where he has been playing in the Super League.

The former Moranbah junior is one of six Celtic Crusaders players released from their contracts with the club after being told they are in the country illegally due to visa discrepancies and ordered to leave.

“It would be a feather in our cap to have him running around for us,” said Cutters operations manager Jamie McDonald, who has previously had some talks with Hannay about the possibility of him returning to Mackay when his time in Super League is finished.

“I understood that if he was to come home (after finishing Super League) he would come home to Mackay,” McDonald said.

“That is no guarantee that he'd play for us, a lot would need to happen before that occurs.

“We'd have to find him work, we'd have to put a decent package together, and whether we could afford it is the question.

“We'd leave no stone unturned to have him, being a local boy, a State of Origin player and a NRL grand finalist (with the North Queensland Cowboys).”

McDonald said the players had been given two to three weeks to leave the country.

“This has been going on for some time but has been kept quiet,” he said.

“I would have thought they'd be left to finish the season and come home after that.

“Apparently it was an issue not from this year but from the previous year when they were issued with the incorrect visas.”

The Australian contingent had visa problems earlier this year just prior to the start of the Super League season.

At the time Hannay told the Daily Mercury that he was keen to return to Mackay to play for his home club Moranbah, and with the Cutters in the Queensland Cup.

The former Origin player has never played senior football with Moranbah, leaving to play for the Cowboys at the age of 17 and later with Cronulla.

He was signed by the Crusaders at the end of 2007.

A UKBA spokesperson told English reporters “We are still continuing to investigate any potential offences that the club may have committed.”

Hannay on verge of signing with Cutters
JOSH ALSTON
October 28th, 2009

FORMER Cowboy Josh Hannay is close to inking a deal with the Mackay Cutters which would see him return to where it all began.

The centre, who was sensationally deported from the UK earlier this year following visa problems, has been tipped to return to his Queensland home in Moranbah.

The Cutters are optimistic they will be able to secure his services - albeit in a reduced capacity - once they can sort out the financial side of the deal.

Hannay played 150 games for the Cowboys before linking with the Cronulla Sharks and then English Super League team Celtic.

Now he is sounding out mining work in Moranbah and Cutters operating manager and former Cowboys teammate Jamie McDonald is working through details which will see him play for the Queensland Cup outfit.

''We're still talking to Josh and we're pretty close to having something in place for him,'' he said.

''There's no formal agreement yet, we're looking at options workwise.

''It might be that he lives in Moranbah and takes on a mining job and comes and plays when he is available.

''Ideally we would have liked for him to play the whole season and live here in Mackay but we're exploring opportunities for him out there at the moment.

''The pay is really good there so we're hoping to come to an agreement, we've just got to sort out a few things.''

Hannay is not the only Cowboys product to be in the Cutters' sights, with a host of former under-20s players in the mix for a contract.

Heading the wishlist are Tyson Martin - who is currently touring with the Papua New Guinea national team - and one-time first-grader Sam Bowie.

''We're talking closely with Peter Jones about which guys are probably too old for the under-20s,'' McDonald said.

''Tyson Martin has spent some time in Proserpine, he's away with the PNG Kumuls at the moment, he has family at the Pride and here in Mackay so we would definitely like to at least speak to him. Sam Bowie is another one who has been recommended to us by the Cowboys, we've had no formal talks with him either but we would definitely like to have a chat with Sam.''

McDonald also lauded the signing of new coach Paul Bramley from Souths Logan.

Bramley had great success at the Brisbane club, lifting them from cellar-dwellers to premiers in two years while he also has a strong connection with Cowboys mentor Neil Henry.

''He's a leading coach in the Queensland Cup at the moment, he's the current Queensland Residents coach and he took Souths Logan from being easybeats to competition frontrunners,'' McDonald said.

''They won the competition last year and were one game off it this year, they were minor premiers both years so he comes with a fair bit of success.

''He's got a good working relationship with Neil Henry after working with him at the Canberra Raiders a couple of years ago so as a feeder club to the Cowboys hopefully that will improve the relationship there.''

Sydney skills to emerge tonight
Charlie Payne
8th May 2010

MORANBAH and Whitsunday will debut new forwards when they go head-to-head in round three of the Skills Training Cup tonight.

<EDITED>

Moranbah are also on the verge of signing another ex-NRL player with considerable Queensland Cup experience.

They will be boosted tonight by the first appearance this year of forward Cliff Manua, who is coming back from an ankle injury, and the STM Cutters’ marquee signing Josh Hannay will play after shaking off a leg injury suffered against Souths in the opening match of the season.

Hannay, a former North Queensland Cowboys, State of Origin and English Super league player, hasn’t managed to break into the STM Cutters’ line-up due to work commitments at the mines.

Thats cause the QLD side was **** back then.

But yeah Hannay was treated poorly - I mean who doesn't give a player a reason why he has been dropped back to park footy?

We used to buy centres. Then Ricky just dropped them to second grade and played backrowers in the centres instead.

And then we decided never to spend up on centres again.
