This is a myth. Most players don't leave the NRL for the ESL because of big money offers. In Paulo's case he probably got similar money per year but a longer deal.
- The salary cap in the ESL is just over 1/3 of what it is in the the NRL (it's about $3.5m AUD)
- Each team is only allowed two "marquee" players earning over $300k. For everyone else in the league that is the maximum they can earn.

Probably the biggest factor is the money is MUCH better than players would earn in the Qld or NSW Cup .. so if you are a good player at that level but can't crack NRL it makes sense to head over... or if you are a 30+ fringe NRL player who would rather make the same money but play first grade each week, you might move for that reason.

The tax rates are lower, which helps too.

Good details burgess but kidna what I meant in the sense that NRL clubs won't be bending over backwards to squeeze him into their squads and give him consistent FG nor a long term deal so overall financially ESL cud work out better for him in bank and game time. it's a long way to move to make less coin afterall, but its better than no coin I spose or reserve grade

Really disappointing that Saturday, which was probably Paulo’s last game for us, was easily his worst game in our colours.

Just seemed completely lost out there which is surprising as he’s been Mr Reliable for us.

If he does get another game hopefully he’s switched on.

It was like he was still stuck in our combos and plays from 2 months ago but the squad has evolved since then. wud have thought training full time with squad wud mitigate some of that but yea agree he looked lost

No worries - I hear/read it all the time that people go to ESL for the money.

IMO this year Paulo has been fantastic in the middle and very ordinary on the edge. Saturday's game was no exception. I reckon Flano knows this - but with two missing centres there wasn't a lot of choice.

that was just an out and out shocker from paulo - he hasn't had one before IIRC so I can cut him some slack but it still needed to be mentioned. A player like him is put into the squad cause you usually know what you will get from him - solid consistency.
He doesn't have the flash to make up for mistakes

He's a good squad filler, not a bad guy to come in and do a job for you during the season.

But come semi final time, I don't want him anywhere near the team.

No. Sharks brought back that retro logo. I think it was the start of the winfield cup the nswrl brought out all those cartoon mascots

He did a lot better for us than I expected but he is still a depth player only. Cheers and all the best.

did some good things and bad things tonight but the bad things were mostly just catch up footy stuff, all our players were pushing passes at that point

Yeah the team lost the plot. Some players went quiet, some made errors, some were stupid. Picking out individuals would be a bit much.

Yes. The game was pretty well gone by the time he got a run. He tried. And you're right about the errors being catch-up stuff. His assist for Lewy's try was skilful.
