Lymphoma has many different variants... and within each of those variants many different sub-groups.

Some are a lot worse than others but none are "not serious". Some are responsive to treatment and some are not. I hope that they've got it early - better chances of rehabilitation the earlier it is diagnosed and treated.

It all depends on the type of lymphoma he has.

Go to wikipedia and search for "lymphoma" and you'll get a heads-up on it.

He (and his brothers) seem like genuine nice guys, it really sucks when something like this happens to someone so young, fit, and healthy in body and mind, and not some piece of crap junkie that robs my house.

CRONULLA prop Johnny Mannah will begin cancer treatment next week, after the results of a biopsy confirmed he has lymphoma.

Mannah, whose brother Tim will play for Parramatta in tonight's match against Penrith, underwent the tests after Sharks doctor Dave Givney became concerned that a cracked vertebra in his back was not healing. Givney sent Mannah to a leading spinal surgeon for tests that detected a "hot spot" – a warning sign for cancer.

Lymphoma is a type of cancer that affects the immune system but 19-year-old Mannah is expected to make a full recovery, as singer Delta Goodrem did when she was diagnosed with the same condition.

In a statement issued by the Sharks, Mannah and his family requested privacy while he undergoes treatment.

"The Sharks can confirm that a biopsy result for Johnny Mannah has come back positive for lymphoma, with Johnny to begin treatment next week," the statement said. "At this stage the club is unable to make further comment or give more detail.

"We would request that the privacy of Johnny and his family is respected while he attempts to deal with this condition and begin his recovery."

Mannah, an Australian schoolboys representative, joined the Sharks this season from Parramatta, where he and 21-year-old Tim played Toyota Cup together last year. The brothers still live together at their family home in Sydney's south-west.

News of Mannah's condition comes as North Queensland and South Sydney prepare to wear special jerseys promoting organisations involved in the fight against cancer this weekend.

The Cowboys, with the support of their major sponsor, Toyota, will carry the Melanoma Institute Australia logo for match against Brisbane at Dairy Farmers Stadium tonight.

Souths' major sponsor, NAB, has also given up the space on the front of the Rabbitohs jersey for a silver ribbon representing Ovarian Cancer Research.

Rabbitohs winger Jamie Simpson has twice beaten cancer after initially being diagnosed with life-threatening non-Hodgkin's lymphoma while a promising schoolboy at Yeppoon's St Brendan's College in 2002.

After undergoing chemotherapy over the following two years, Simpson returned to the playing field and had a stint in the Queensland Cup before being signed by Souths last year. Simpson and teammates Issac Luke and Beau Champion launched the silver ribbon campaign by selling ribbons and pens in Sydney's CBD this week.

Okay well that seems to be some positive news. Seems he should be okay and will probably play footy again too.

I am just wanting to say regardless of race or religion. No one wishes this upon any other human being. This is very sad to hear and I'm determined for Johnny to get over this. No one deserves to be put into his position and I have faith that Johnny will come through stronger from his adversity.

Was pretty devestated when I heard the news. Not only can the Sharks not take a trick this year, but what this poor young bloke has been diagnosed with is just terrible. Get well soon mate, all our thoughts are with you!

this is very sad and terrible for the young man, this might be motivation for the boys to win. Do it for johnny.

Hopefully he fights it and can soldier on, no one likes to see a life lost at a young age.

Wait does that mean Mannah is officially gone? Has he quit Rugby League or something?

Life is so f*cked..Rapists and pedophiles are out there wrecking peoples lives with what they do to their victims and good young blokes like this get a disease that they dont diserve...It is so unfair!...The rapists and pedophiles should be the ones that get diagnosed with these diseases cause they dont diserve to go through life smoothly due to all the familys that they affect and lives they ruin. But theres nothing you can do about that I spose...All the best Jonny hopefully all goes well!!!

PARRAMATTA prop Tim Mannah will dedicate his first semi-final appearance to his brother Jon, who has been diagnosed with cancer.

Jon will turn 20 today but will not be able to celebrate the occasion at Kogarah Oval, where his older brother will be part of an Eels pack attempting to reverse last weekend's loss to the Dragons.

Cronulla forward Jon is facing a more serious battle after recently being diagnosed with lymphoma. He is undergoing chemotherapy every second week and the early signs indicate he will recover fully and resume his NRL career.

Tim said he was buoyed by Jon's positive progress and would dedicate his maiden finals appearance to him. ''We're really close,'' Tim told The Sun-Herald. ''Seeing him at home sick makes you realise that you're pretty lucky to be playing sport.

''After the game, the first thing I do is check the phone. There's always a little message for me there [from Jon] … He's a tough kid and he's doing well.''

Mannah said his family was stunned by the initial diagnosis. ''Cancer, the 'c' word, it's pretty scary at the time,'' he said. ''The way he handled it was really good, he helped us handle it.

''When you realise that it's not the end of the world and people are doing it a lot tougher than we are, there's nothing you can complain about.''

The Mannah boys, who did a milk run together before rising through the grades at Parramatta, continue to live at home with their parents at Condell Park. They come from a deeply religious family and are active members of the Faith Baptist Church in Regents Park.

''Our faith is a big part of our family and we believe everything happens for a reason,'' Tim said. ''It's a slow-growing cancer. Lucky he was playing footy, he got the injury in the back and they found it through that.''

Jon will require eight chemotherapy treatments over 16 weeks. ''If everything goes to plan, the treatment should have the cancer out of his system by Christmas-time,'' Tim said.

OUR thoughts go out to Cronulla forward Jon Mannah, who is having chemotherapy for Hodgkin's lymphoma. Mannah attended the club's presentation night last week and officials said he was in good spirits.

<EDITED>

If there's one thing Eels prop Tim Mannah wants more than to win a premiership ring on Sunday, it's to have his brother Johnny at ANZ Stadium to see him do it. Johnny Mannah, who plays for the Sharks, was diagnosed with lymphoma a month ago, and Tim is unsure if he will be able to attend the grand final.

''He came last Friday night, and to see him there was really good, but he gets treatment on Thursday so he might be a bit dusty. We'll just have to wait and see - he's got a ticket with his name on it,'' Tim said. ''Seeing what he's had to go through and knowing how much he loves his footy and how much he would love to be out there playing … puts things in perspective.''

Healthy brother is Mannah from heaven
30 Sep 09 @ 10:49am
by Steven Deare

MOST Eels players will use their ticket allocation to Sunday’s big game to ensure their nearest and dearest are at the ground, watching them play the biggest game of their career.

Few of those guests’ presence might be as poignant as one invited by prop Tim Mannah.

Mannah hopes to have his brother Johnny, 19, in the stands. He might seem a standard family inclusion, except that he was diagnosed with lymphoma only five weeks ago.

Johnny is still undergoing regular chemotherapy and isn’t even guaranteed to be there.

``He gets treated on Thursday, they say,’’ Mannah said.

``We’re just hoping he pulls up all right and feeling good enough to come out.

``He usually pulls up a bit dusty for three or fours days after that so hopefully he is going to come out.’’

Johnny is also a rugby league prop and plays for Cronulla. The brothers squared off against each other earlier in the season in the NRL.

Yet that was put on hold for Johnny once he suffered a back injury. He visited the doctor and a scan also found a warning sign of lymphoma, and the diagnosis was made.

Mannah, 21, said it was a scary time for his family.

``Everyone gets scared of cancer, the `c’ word. It was a tough time,’’ he said.

``But his reaction made it so much better for everyone else to deal with it.

``He dealt with it really positively. And that’s probably been the reason why everyone else has coped so well.’’

The younger Mannah isn’t in the clear yet. He is scheduled to have six treatments fortnightly before the end of the year.

The elder Mannah is hoping for the best.

``Hopefully by then he’s back on track and ready to go back to training,’’ he said.

``He’ll be in remission obviously but he’ll be fine.’’

It is a struggle greater than their league careers.

The two share a close interest in each other’s football, which will make the Eels grand final even more special if Johnny can be there.

``I let him know I scored a try,’’ Mannah said.

``He’s been teasing me about not scoring so I scored one on the weekend which was good.

``But we’re really close and he’s been wishing me the best for the last few weeks and come Sunday he’s going to be hoping we get a win.

``It’s definitely the most important game either of us have played. So it’s definitely exciting and a buzz for both of us.’’
