Mannah to make league return

First grade football was shut down at Henson Park before he was born, but it is where the NRL career of Cronulla's John Mannah will be reborn this Saturday.

Mannah was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma midway through last year and when he comes off the bench for Cronulla in its NSW Cup match against Balmain Ryde-Eastwood, it will mark the official start of his remarkable comeback.

After his diagnosis last year, the 20-year-old front rower had to stop playing and start chemotherapy.

However, despite the physical and mental difficulties he faced, he remained determined to make it back to the NRL where he impressed with 12 matches in 2009.

"I hope so, first grade is definitely one of my goals but then again I still think in terms of fitness I'm still a bit off," Mannah said.

"I just found out today (Tuesday) so I'm pretty stoked.

"I'm so excited for it, but I'll be blowing a fair bit. I don't even know how long I'll play but I just really want to get on there, it doesn't really matter how long."

Mannah has been back training since April, but only began full contact last week.

Sharks coach Ricky Stuart and the training staff offered him the chance to play this weekend, and Mannah did not need to be asked twice.

"They kind of left it up to me, I said I wanted to play for sure," he said.

"I appreciate the opportunity from them to come back so early. I've been back here two months now and I'm starting to really find my fitness.

"The trainer just let me know he thinks I might be ready so he said if you want to play this week we can get you on there for a bit.

"The club's been amazing, they've been quite loyal to me and their support has really meant a lot and hopefully I can get back out there and pay them back."

CRONULLA'S John Mannah will this weekend play his first game since he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in mid-2009, coming off the bench for the Sharks' NSW Cup team against Balmain Ryde-Eastwood. Despite the physical and mental difficulties of treatment, Mannah remains determined to make it back to the NRL where he had impressed with 12 matches in 2009. ''I'm so excited for it, but I'll be blowing a fair bit. I don't even know how long I'll play but I just really want to get on there.'' Mannah returned to training in April, but only began full contact last week.

Johnny Mannah preparing to to return to the field

JOHN Mannah never gave up hope. Sure, there were those dark days. Days he can't even remember. Like the whole week he lost in his living room.

Too sick and tired from the chemotherapy, he didn't have the strength to take a step.

But yesterday, the inspirational Cronulla prop felt like running a marathon.

Capping 286 days of torment and pain, Mannah added the final chapter to one of sport's most endearing comeback stories by being named to play rugby league again this Saturday.

Less than three months after his final chemotherapy for Hodgkin's lymphoma, the 20-year-old will return for Cronulla's NSW Cup side against Balmain at Henson Park. And the 114kg prop can hardly contain his excitement.

"I'm back, baby," an elated Mannah told The Daily Telegraph yesterday. "I'm one happy bloke at the moment."

But moments after having his comeback confirmed by Sharks head conditioner Trent Elkin, Mannah conceded his will at times had been severely tested.

"Sure, there were definite times of doubt, but never in myself did I give up on it," Mannah said.

"Throughout the whole time I just kept telling myself, 'there's going to be a day when I play again'. I never gave that up ... and here I am."

Yep, here he is.

The hulking prop who has stunned his peers and inspired his older brother Tim, who plays for the Eels.

He's tortured his body to make it back.

From throwing up at his first sprint session back from treatment to doing secret weights sessions in the gym.

He's a devout family man and a gentle giant who coach Ricky Stuart describes as "the most mentally tough player that I've ever met" in more than 20 years of football.

"I haven't seen anything like this before ... the strength of mind that Johnny Mannah has," Stuart said. "He's really one of a kind."

But the modest Mannah doesn't see himself as anything special.

"I don't look at it that way. If I can be, well that's great," he said.

"But I'm not so much proud of myself. I can't sit here and take credit for it because so much of getting through it has to do with my family.

"My close friends, too. And also, when I was first diagnosed, my family and I were overwhelmed by the support we got from the footy community.

"It was unbelievable. It still hasn't sunk in."

Mannah says he doesn't care how many minutes he gets on Saturday, but he does concede there will be nerves.

"I'm ecstatic right now, so I can imagine this feeling multiplied by a little bit more," Mannah said.

"In terms of physically, I won't know until I get out there.

"But I'm sure there'll be nerves that kick in because that's normal for me."

But one thing Mannah won't have on his shoulders is pressure.

"The coaching staff were talking about not naming him on the team sheet so that there wouldn't be any pressure on him ahead of his first game back," Stuart said.

"I told them, 'Pressure, what pressure? He's just beaten cancer'.

"I'm pretty sure he won't be worried about playing a game of footy. It's just a fantastic story."

I agree, this is fantastic news, congratulations to Johnny.

I only hope that he remembers all the club has done to support him through this and stays with us for life. I would be filthy if he turns inot a gun player and signs to another club for more money.

I don't think he is the type of bloke to do this though, a very good bloke, committed Christian with strong family values, I actually hope he can convince his brother to come over one day!:good:

Mannah Makes Successful Return In NSW Cup

12/06/2010 3:30:50 PM

Sharks prop Jon Mannah made a successful return to rugby league on Saturday afternoon, playing for the Sharks NSW Cup side in their 18-point loss to Balmain Ryde-Eastwood at Henson Park.

Despite going down 38-20 to the top-of-the-table Tigers, Mannah played 28 minutes of football, just three months after his final chemotherapy for Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Having battled a number of physical and mental difficulties during his time fighting cancer, the 114kg prop remained determined to make it back to the NRL where he impressed with 12 matches in 2009.

And the 20-year-old did just that - coming off the bench for the black, white and blue in is highly-anticipated return.

"it was great... it brought back some old memories, and it felt really good taking the ball up," Mannah said after the game.

"I played the last 10 minutes of the first half and the start of the second half, but we defended that whole time so the last 8 minutes of the game I came back on and got a chance to hit the ball up."

"It felt good and I guess there is still a long way to go, but I think I can get better every week from here."

"Just to have been back in training over the past month or so was awesome for me... but to play today with the boys was amazing," Mannah said.

So did Mannah get any sleep the night before?

"Yes, i did suprisingly... I slept like a baby, there were no nerves which was good."

Mannah's comeback will go down as one of the most remarkable of all time, but he admits he couldn't have done it without Ricky Stuart and everyone at the Cronulla Sharks.

"I was on cloud nine in the months where I played first grade last season, and then to be told it would come to a holt was a bit of slap in the face," Mannah said of the diagnosis.

"I can't be thankful enough to the Sharks, they have been absolutely outstanding and so loyal."

"At times there it was suggested by others on the outside that the only way the club could get around it all was to sack me... But I thank Ricky and the club, I really appreciate their support, it's been so helpful."

For now though, Mannah's sights are set on his next match... but he's got other things to concentrate on first.

"Yeah I'm a bit sore which was expected, so I'll be getting a feed and heading home to the ice bath."

An ice bath in winter?

"Yes... I can't wait," he smirked.

Cancer survivor Mannah's brave return

Cancer survivor Mannah's brave return

CANCER survivor John Mannah completed one of sport's great comebacks yesterday when he made a heart-warming return to rugby league.

In front of his closest friends and family, including brother and Parramatta prop Tim, 20-year-old Mannah added another chapter to his remarkable story of survival.

Just six months after being diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, the popular forward returned to the paddock in a NSW Cup match against Balmain-Ryde Eastwood at Henson Park.

And despite the Sharks going down 34-20 to the Tigers, the lop-sided result failed to wipe the smile from the 20-year-old’s face.

Granted two separate stints from the interchange bench, Mannah played 28-minutes of football just three months after his final chemotherapy treatment.

“It was great... it brought back some old memories, and it felt really good taking the ball up," Mannah said after the game.

"I played the last 10 minutes of the first half and the start of the second half, but we defended that whole time so the last 8 minutes of the game I came back on and got a chance to hit the ball up.

"It felt good and I guess there is still a long way to go, but I think I can get better every week from here.

Mannah Relishes Greatest Victory

Mannah relishes greatest victory
DANIEL LANE
June 13, 2010

IT WASN'T quite a miracle at old Henson Park yesterday but the sight of prop Johnny Mannah back in action for Cronulla's NSW Cup team after his battle with cancer was a triumph of faith.

''It's great to be back,'' he said after playing 25 minutes in the loss to Balmain Ryde-Eastwood.

''I had no expectations. I had no idea of how my body would pull up, so the intention was always to go out and do my best, but I enjoyed every minute.''

Mannah credited his belief in God for his conquering cancer. ''The week after each treatment was really tough. I was home-bound and there were times when I was quite low … your emotions go up and down … but one thing that was rock solid was God. I can't stop thanking God.''

Mannah's brother, Tim, of the Parramatta Eels, was in the crowd and later thanked Sharks coach Ricky Stuart for sticking by Johnny when the business side of league meant it would have been ''acceptable'' to terminate the contract of a player with an uncertain future.

''My family can't speak highly enough of Ricky Stuart,'' Tim said. ''I know Johnny wants to pay him back by playing well, but what the Sharks did by keeping Johnny on [contract] meant a lot. Ricky brought it back to a human level.''

Stuart, who has had his own battles at Cronulla, hailed Mannah's return as inspiring. The coach, who recently revealed he would step down as Sharks coach at the end of this season, said he was driven by one thought when he learned of Mannah's illness.

''We gave Johnny every possible support to get his health right,'' he said. ''Football was secondary, his health was the biggest priority.''
