ONE-TIME Cronulla halfback Jason Ferris faces surgery tomorrow to repair more than eight fractures in his face after he was attacked at a Glen Innes hotel.

Ferris, 33, who played 96 top-grade games with five clubs, including the Sharks and Manly, was bashed more than a week ago in his home town.

He was left almost unrecognisable after the assault. A Sydney specialist on Friday asked him: "What were you hit with?''

Two men, a 33-year-old from Glen Innes and a 33-year-old from Grafton, have been charged over the attack.

Ferris, who is on medication for depression and seeking help for a gambling addiction (he will face court himself next month on theft charges of which he is unwilling to go into details about or how he will answer the charges) told colleague Barry Toohey the vicious attack was completely unprovoked. I did absolutely nothing to bring it on,'' he said. "I was hit first off from behind in the pub and after I walked out to leave, they were waiting for me. I can't say too much, but it wasn't just fists. There were a few of them. It was a dog act.''

FORMER NRL star Jason Ferris is still yet to appear in court over dishonesty charges he is facing from his employment at a Gundagai hotel last year.

The Inverell Hawks are waiting on the outcome of the case before deciding whether to sign Ferris for the 2010 season.

The 33-year-old was due to appear at Gundagai Local Court on Monday but instead, the magistrate received a letter he had faxed to the court office on January 1.

Ferris played for Manly, West Tigers, Canberra and Cronulla in the NRL and was captain-coach of the Gundagai Tigers last season leading them to the grand final.

He is alleged to have stolen more than $7500 by using the cash to place bets during his one-month stint at Gundagai’s Criterion Hotel in October last year.

He was due to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty to three charges on Monday.

In his letter, which was faxed to the office while it was closed for the New-Year period, Ferris requested a court staff member to notify him of his next court date as neither he or his lawyer knew when he was supposed to next attend court.

Ferris also said that he was booked to have more surgery on Saturday, January 2 following a ‘group bashing’.

Magistrate Geraldine Beattie accepted the letter and adjourned the case until February.

Ferris lead the Gundagai Tigers to a grand final last season.

<EDITED>

EX-MANLY and Sharks playmaker Jason Ferris made a remarkable appearance for Northern Beaches A-Grade side Valley United on Sunday after fronting Manly court the previous week. Ferris faced a magistrate on an arrest warrant from his former home town of Gundagai, where he'd failed to appear at a sentence hearing just two days earlier.

Ferris was charged with several offences relating to his previous workplace, Gundagai's Criterion Hotel. But much to the fury of locals, the magistrate awarded him bail - and perhaps a final fling on the footy field in the Spartans' 54-14 win over Forestville. Ferris is now due to be sentenced on June 7.

Former rugby league star jailed
11 Jun, 2010 11:48 AM

GLEN Innes-born former National Rugby League star, Jason Ferris, has been jailed for a series of offences.

Ferris, 33, appeared in Gundagai Local Court on Monday in relation to the theft of $7500 from the town’s Criterion Hotel.

Ferris, captain-coach of the Gundagai Tigers rugby league team in 2009, has lodged an appeal against the sentence that is set to keep him behind bars for at least the next 13 months.

The ex-NRL halfback, 33, was refused bail and has been remanded in custody until his appeal, which has been set down for July 26 at the Wagga Wagga District Court.

Monday’s sentencing took place about eight months after Ferris was arrested and charged with accepting money for betting on the totalisator in a prohibited way, obtaining money by deception and obtaining money by making a false statement.

Ferris pleaded guilty to all three charges, which related to the theft of $7500 and using the cash to place bets during his one-month stint working at Gundagai’s Criterion Hotel last October.

For obtaining money by deception and obtaining money by making a false statement he was sentenced to nine-and-a-half months’ prison with a non-parole period of five months.

The prison terms will be served concurrently starting on February 7 next year, should his appeal fail.

For accepting money for betting on the totalisator in a prohibited way, Ferris was fined $800 and ordered to pay $76 costs of court.

Ferris also faced court for the breach of three section 12 bonds (suspended sentences), one for mid-range drink driving and the other two for driving while disqualified offences last year.

All three of the bonds were revoked and he was sentenced to 18 months prison with a non-parole period of 12 months, starting immediately.

Ferris played 123 games for five NRL clubs - Canberra, North Queensland, Cronulla, Northern Eagles and Manly - and in 2008 returned to Glen Innes to play for his home town team.

In November, he suffered a broken jaw and a fractured eye socket when allegedly attacked by two men outside a Glen Innes hotel.
