bird was cooked and flanno knew it - he offered him the deal knowing that he wasnt going to take it but to make brisbane or newy pay more

as for val, he will still be a sharks legend, and will now be a cowboys legend

He wasn't cooked, but the money on offer was too much risk over reward.

His body went south after Broncos convinced him he was broken

Yeah me too.

Sadly for him, his time since the Sharks has all been down hill. With injuries and who he’s currently playing for - I think 15,16,17 will be his high point career-wise.

Hasn’t played a finals match since he left us.

Yep definitely his high point, he won't top it.

The weight of expectation around being the next Colin Best was too much for him

I remember Paul Kent would use Mark McGaw as an example of when a guy changes clubs and his career just falls off a cliff. Sparkles was an international and NSW player at Cronulla, and once he left that was it. Some guys just fit at certain clubs.

So with Bird, and probably Val too, you look at where they were at the end of 2016. They could of been anything.

I know Val has continued to play rep footy. But you just wonder where those 2 would of ended up if they were just content to play centre and wing together at the Sharks for their entire careers.

Vals issue was the NFL move more than anything I’d say

Could have stayed and been our fullback but was always angling to get to North Queensland it seemed

Yeah I think he was always going to end up there at some stage. Was a matter of when, not if.

I get why Birdy chased the dollars given his medical issues but I wonder if he'll regret it when he looks back on his career.

Interesting he signed with us
2 years
then we upgraded second year and added a 3rd

In podcast he says he wishes he'd signed for 10 so obviously would have liked to have stayed, looking back.
He doesn't remember why he signed only 1 year extension... very good chance it would have been he thought by time that was up he could get more and he didn't wanna tie himself to that $ any longer. Very good chance.

But to say now he wishes he signed for 10 years... obviously some regret

Something that's easy to think in high sight I suppose. Who knows what he would have thought if he'd had an injury-free career?

From memory he signed for 2 years as a relative unknown.

After his breakout season he upgraded his contract and added a 3rd season.

So rather than resigning, he “re-set” his original deal, at a better price.

2 x 2 year deals, but over 3 years

I remember back then that Phil Gould decided that the way he played he was a lock. So yeah it went downhill from there...

Speaking of Sparkles, him and gladiators are both making a comeback.

He's going to be the ref on the reboot apparently.

The gladiators documentary was really good, if your haven't seen it yet. Think it was on Netflix
