That was great - feel much more positive than last night, after watching Fergo and Toops more than match it.

Only criticisms - most of the NRL All Stars were scared to be the bad guy... and the sickening Hayne love from Gould and Warren. Even when he did a stupid grubber they show a replay! Looks like Burgess is going to get the same. OK we know he's good ffs!

It was a good game, despite there being 30 errors in total or something and quite a few potential passing off the ground penalties that didnt get awarded (which im not saying is a bad thing). But that is far enough for the first game of the season.

Toops and Fergo both played awesome, i think both knocked it on once but a majority of the other players did at least once also.

Also Burgess, Soward, Jennings, Campbell, Thurston and Rose also had great games.

While Watmough and Finch both had shockers in my opinion.

Also i didnt see Henry Perenara on the field as a referee at all, did anyone?

I'm still a bit iffy with the concept but meh.

Fergo was very good, but was put firmly in his place by Burgess after his hit on Campbell. Will be good to see if Fergo stands up to him when Sharks play Rabbits.
Bird...still can't get the cheap shots out of his game,he is made from the same cloth as Slater,Ennis and Thurston. They are all good players, but just have a grubby ruthlessness about them which grates...

Pretty good game, I thought. It was sloppy but they were trying to throw it around. Thought the "power play" thing was a bit of a giggle - haven't seen "the wall" for awhile, now we know why! There needs to be more of an advantage to the attacking team to make it worthwhile, they should be able to kick.

Gave me the sh!ts to see Janey Soward running in the winning try!

He played well, so that can be a good or a bad thing, depending on you i guess...

Didn't they broadcast the game in Victoria? A delayed replay even?

if burgess got hurt im pretty sure i'd wet myself

if birdy's playing for indigenous then im backing them

Burgess was super tonight, I bet its the Souths fans who are wetting themselves.

Topou went pretty well too, added energy to the team when he was on .Ferguson has heaps of raw talent but boy he has a mistake or two in him at the wrong times.

burgess can certainly hit..Fergo didnt take any shat from him when poor old preston got body slammed by burgess

that power play can piss right off, keep it to gimmick games

is it wrong of me to have wanted someone to either smash bird into next century or break his leg, you know..karma

In a place where the impossible happens, pigs fly,
Geeeeez im pumped for the start of the season, personally i really enjoyed the game, maybe ive been footy starved for too long but any game would have done me fine. Fergo was brilliant, he put it over falou in their personal battle, not many have been able to say that, and Toops was once again a solid performer, his second phase play seems to be a key part of his game which is good to see. **** see Fergos pace, that boy can run, also good to see him amning up to burgess and showing some passion. For mine, best player was Burgess, considering everyone was questioning his ability to play in Australian humidity, i think he did great, solid workrate and one of few Allstars who seemed as though they didnt care about hurting themselves, he remminds me of a pommie SBW.
Unlucky gidley with that injury, and to think it was his own teammate, poor patterson is gonna cop it now :fergo:

The key difference: the Indigenous All Stars were genuinely playing for something. In a weird, sports-universe way, this game was a metaphor for their struggles as a people. If anything was evident from the first twenty minutes of play, it's that they weren't their to have a casual hit out. They WANTED to kick our butts in a manner of near-defiance. This wasn't just for them, it was for every indigenous person that suffered past and present.

Still, I couldn't help but to walk away from watching that game thinking that it was a brilliant idea, served up at the wrong time of the season. A game of that nature is best played two weeks AFTER the NRL season comes to an end, when the dust has settled and both teams can give it their all without fear of getting injured.

Totally agree, its rediculous, not a fan at all, both attempts of getting the extra points by the allstars were absmal, i mean, they would have worked a bit on that stupid 'wall' play (not that it payed off) and the ball ends up in the arms of nate miles??.... i dont know whats more shocking, his attempt of a chip or the size of his forehead

El Coco I couldn't agree with you more mate and was thinking exactly the same thing during the game. Indigenous side score and they are pumped. NRL side score and pull out plays from the 70s like the wall and friggin' mousetrap and try to look like the harlem globe trotters and get nailed - embarrassing!!! NRL side seemed to come at it from a commercial hit and giggle game for the first 20 minutes and then realised it was getting away from them.

Ok...

I've just finished watching this "game" with all hype and histrionics that only a commentary team like Gould and Warren can inspire.

Firstly, congratulations to Preston Campbell for conceiving the idea and Michael Searle for putting it into reality.

I don't know what code of football was being played out there but it wasn't Rugby League. That's ok, because I suspect that this was never intended to be a Rugby League game.

As a spectacle and extravaganza it reasonably hit the mark. In terms of it highlighting the contribution of indigenous players to Rugby League, it was well and truly overdue.

As far as it being an on-going thing... I honestly can't see it having legs. To compare this to State of Origin is ludicrous - there is a fundamental failing in the concept - the Indigenous players can rightly feel pride in the jersey... the "All Stars" will struggle to find that meaning and sense of belonging and ownership of their jersey.

Regardless as to how fake and contrived the concept is (in my opinion it seems not too dissimilar to a match between the Harlem Globetrotters and The Generals), I am truly hopeful that it does have sucess and that all profits for the organisers, broadcasters and derived advertising revenue are ethically filtered towards improving the life of indigenous people in Australia.

Health, Substance Abuse and Education in Aboriginal Communities are clearly three areas that need to be addressed both externally and on the ground.

A harsh fact about indigenous Australia: If you are an Aboriginal male, you are 28 times more likely to serve a sentence in jail and you have an average life expectancy of 52 years.

To sum up... I'm not a fan of the concept and it does strike me as incredibly tokenistic and patronising. However, if it is a means of promoting Indigenous awareness and proposes positive role models for young Indigenous people to aspire to... as well as generate funds to attack the problems facing Indigenous communities... then I'm quite willing to go along with the show.

Jersey auctions a nice fit for the All Stars game
BRAD WALTER
February 14, 2010

PRESTON Campbell wore three jerseys in last night's historic All Stars match - one that was auctioned off after quarter-time to the heavy hitters in the main corporate box at Skilled Stadium, another for which fans were able to bid online, and the third for him to keep.

The other players in the Indigenous All Stars team wore two jerseys and those they changed out of at half-time were also put up for auction on the NRL website, along with the headgear worn by Johnathan Thurston and Jamie Soward.

Up to $150,000 was expected to be raised from the auctions, taking the income generated from the first representative fixture not staged under the Australian Rugby League banner to more than $2 million through the goodwill of the NRL clubs and players and the ingenuity of organisers, led by Titans CEO Michael Searle - the driving force behind the push for an independent commission to run the game.

The match was the first to be broadcast live on the internet and mobile phones as well as television, while the Federal Government contributed $275,000 in sponsorship money to have the slogan ''Learn, Earn, Legend'' on the Indigenous team's jerseys.

All profits from the game, which included the match payments of the 40 NRL stars as those on both sides played for free, will be invested in community programs supported by the 16 clubs, with a focus on indigenous programs.

?Parramatta coach Daniel Anderson admits he is no closer to finding out why his team started last season so poorly. But he hopes a pre-season trip to Perth, where the Eels will tackle last year's minor premier St George Illawarra today, will be the tonic to inspire a fast start in 2010.

In Anderson's own words, the Eels were ordinary early last year, with a four-game losing streak seemingly ending their finals aspirations. A seven-game winning run got them into eighth spot and from there the Jarryd Hayne-inspired side reached the grand final, only to fall at the final hurdle to Melbourne.

''The question's been asked a couple of times and I can blow smoke if you want but no [I don't know why we started so badly],'' Anderson said. ''At some stage there it clicked. There were probably multiple factors to it but in the end confidence is one of those things that is just hanging around and unless you actually grab it, you can look like a team that don't know each and then the next week everyone's in sync.''

While last season's Dally M winner Hayne and St George favourites Jamie Soward and Matt Cooper will be missing due to All-Stars duty, the likes of Fuifui Moimoi, Krisnan Inu, Daniel Mortimer, Darius Boyd, Jeremy Smith, Ben Creagh and Ben Hornby have made the trip to Perth.

To complicate this matter and a major flaw in the concept of this game (at least to me) is trying to exuberate the pride of being either an NRL All Stars player or fan without coming across as a racist? In a rivalry like Origin, it's okay to hate the Maroons (or Blues) and daresay makes for better games. In a game of this nature, however, such attitudes can't be held by the players unless they want to come across as a person with prejudice. What works for one team (pride in the jersey) doesn't seem to be able to work for the other without that particular person being branded in ways that could be completely misguided. In that regard, maybe it's better for this game to be played now when there is still a casual feel to it, rather than have it at a time where everything is just personal.

I've also just come to the conclusion that I make a lot less sense when trying to post from my iPhone. I promise I won't do this often...

it was sumthin like 1 in 6 in wa were convicted of a criminal offence last year which sounds bad but i think the white trash over here contribute to their mental state as well but thats another conversation

i thought the game was awsome (thank **** it was on fox), tbh id watch any game of league right now im that starved of it but it was genuinely exciting and to all those who bag the concept, did you hire a movie and ignore it or did you watch it just to whinge about it later??

toops and fergs played well as did everyone involved for a preseason clash, and i think gidley was the only one who suffered any sort of injury (and prob a bad one) and how fast is fergo! he might have missed the tackle on folau that led to the break but how many people could have run him down with a 10m headstart in open play. awsome.

o and bird hasnt lost any ability i thought he was the best on field which is great for the bloody titans so thanks old management and anyone who supported sacking our best player before he was proven guilty. move on.

Im watching the game now, and although its a good concept, and Preston should be very proud, I cant help but feel like a racist if I cheer for the "all stars". I agree with coco, this game may indirectly create some form of racial tension as at the end of the say it is black vs whites.

Ps, I cant believe I see a ginger bollocks playing hooker for the black team..........

Just watching now and Im very proud of fergo, amazing chase down of a bolting israel falou!!

He just may be the "poster boy" the sharks need.

ooooooooooh everytime birdy gets tackled he opens wide up ready to give a great offload......... ahhhhhhhhhh much missed memories....

Also, Im not sure I mind the power play, it wouldnt really be something teams used, unless in desperate situations, and could make things very exciting in the dying minutes of a game, I do however think kicks should be allowed.

It was obviously taken from America, not sure if its a good thing to copy the yanks.
