Jersey auctions a nice fit for the All Stars game

PRESTON Campbell wore three jerseys in last night's historic All Stars match - one that was auctioned off after quarter-time to the heavy hitters in the main corporate box at Skilled Stadium, another for which fans were able to bid online, and the third for him to keep.
The other players in the Indigenous All Stars team wore two jerseys and those they changed out of at half-time were also put up for auction on the NRL website, along with the headgear worn by Johnathan Thurston and Jamie Soward.
Up to $150,000 was expected to be raised from the auctions, taking the income generated from the first representative fixture not staged under the Australian Rugby League banner to more than $2 million through the goodwill of the NRL clubs and players and the ingenuity of organisers, led by Titans CEO Michael Searle - the driving force behind the push for an independent commission to run the game.
The match was the first to be broadcast live on the internet and mobile phones as well as television, while the Federal Government contributed $275,000 in sponsorship money to have the slogan ''Learn, Earn, Legend'' on the Indigenous team's jerseys.
All profits from the game, which included the match payments of the 40 NRL stars as those on both sides played for free, will be invested in community programs supported by the 16 clubs, with a focus on indigenous programs.
?Parramatta coach Daniel Anderson admits he is no closer to finding out why his team started last season so poorly. But he hopes a pre-season trip to Perth, where the Eels will tackle last year's minor premier St George Illawarra today, will be the tonic to inspire a fast start in 2010.
In Anderson's own words, the Eels were ordinary early last year, with a four-game losing streak seemingly ending their finals aspirations. A seven-game winning run got them into eighth spot and from there the Jarryd Hayne-inspired side reached the grand final, only to fall at the final hurdle to Melbourne.
''The question's been asked a couple of times and I can blow smoke if you want but no [I don't know why we started so badly],'' Anderson said. ''At some stage there it clicked. There were probably multiple factors to it but in the end confidence is one of those things that is just hanging around and unless you actually grab it, you can look like a team that don't know each and then the next week everyone's in sync.''
While last season's Dally M winner Hayne and St George favourites Jamie Soward and Matt Cooper will be missing due to All-Stars duty, the likes of Fuifui Moimoi, Krisnan Inu, Daniel Mortimer, Darius Boyd, Jeremy Smith, Ben Creagh and Ben Hornby have made the trip to Perth.
