Great post fitz...

You're not part of the media are you? ;)

Not anymore.. but in the interests of honest disclosure I will say that I have worked as a Production Manager in TV News and Current Affairs in my distant past and have a fairly clear idea as to how stupid and cynical the whole damn business is.

Lets face it... if the right media strategies were taken in 2002... and in 2008 and 2009 none of this mess that we're in now would exist.

Too many cowboys... not enough thinkers.

I mean, clearly the current administration is totally out of their depth and rather than listening to advice and taking decisive action, they're digging themselves further and further into the guano.

This is a multi-million dollar organisation and it appears to be run by people who seem better equipped to be running a monster meat tray raffle down at The Swamp.

If it wasn't so serious I'd be in stitches.

I thought he didn't even hold a formal contract with the club, so what is all this talk of a possible payout?

Excerpt from the SMH:

Zappia's position as chief executive appears untenable, with powerful figures from NSW Premier Nathan Rees to NRL chief executive David Gallop calling for his immediate resignation. But Zappia is said to be determined to extract a hefty payout.

This has been the eternal problem at Cronulla. The place runs on an oily rag - no money to spend equipping their people to deal with the media, let alone understanding the media game. Everything is done on a wing and a prayer.

That's fine most of the time, but when you find yourself in the midst of the biggest media frenzy the game has seen it shows how vulnerable you can be.

Yeah I read that thanks Woody and it surprised me, because I don't see how he can be chasing a payout if he doesn't have a contract.

How did this become another Zappia thread? Short attention span people.

You made the thread about a line in the sand about off-field incidents and people are discussing the impact of the latest off-field incident... Not much of a stretch if you ask me lol

If Zappia is looking for a hefty payout then i think he should keep looking as i dont like his chances whilew working without a contract. Am i wrong?

Sharks need to do exactly what the Bulldogs did and put new faces in the spotlight and show their new culture with any PR opportunity and it must be able to show in their recruitment.

No there's enough talk about teh off field incidents in other threads. I was making the point that the club had become a punching bag and that it's time for someone at the club to stand up and get us back on the right track. Im talking about the structural make up of the club - who looks after the admin and who looks after the footy. Because at the moment no one is promoting the footy or giving the fans anything to cheer about. We can wallow and hide and put up with the bad headlines or we can go on the offensive and talk footy and recruitment and all the things we should be doing.

Sad thing is I feel I could do a better job and I'm nay qualified enough to be entertaining such thoughts. However, give it a crack fitz. You've sold me, I'd employ you and I don't say so in jest.

If there isn't a media manager at Sharks I'd be flabbergasted and if this is them doing their job I'd be mortified.

you beat me to it kelpie, I was going to suggest that with fitzs' experience he should be involved in the media side of our club. seriously, either you know what you're talking about or you can pull the wool over anyone's eyes. either one would do at the moment!;)

Thanks for the rap guys... I'm just another fan who is passionate about the Sharks...
but I do appreciate the feedback.

All of us who come into these forums have our own opinions and viewpoints. The purpose of these forums is is to put a voice to our concerns, our ideas, our fears and our joys with a hope that we may connect with like-minded people... or at least have people who'll argue rationally that we're wrong. That's human... and it's something that would normally happen around the dinner table... or a bevvy or twelve at the pub.

The main thing that I'm sensing in these forums is that the fans feel like they have a connection to the players but are rapidly feeling on the outer of the club as a whole.

I must admit, I get the sense that the Club recently hold the fans somewhat in contempt. That is just a sense I get... I can't really back that up with facts, but it does seem as though the club wants our membership dollars, but doesn't really want to involve it's members or the wider community in it. Or encourage deeper ties with the local community at all

We've lost our way.

An interesting fact that I was reading about the other day about the Shire. Of the 53,000 jobs in the Shire, approximately 40,000 are staffed by people living in the Shire.

That is a phenomenal statistic and what it really highlights is a sense of ownership of this place by its residents and a connection to this place in both a work sense as well as a home sense.

We also have a remarkable number 17.5% of us are involved in some sort of voluntary work.

The Sharks have such an untapped potential here - I think they've become so preoccupied with the National RL that they've lost connection with their grass roots.

This is some of the most fertile Rugby League Territory around and last Sundey, despite all the crap that we've had to go through this year, 14,000+ of us cheered our team on to a win.

There is an old saying "It takes a single spark to start a forest fire" and that's what I think is going on right now. I can feel it... I see it when I do the shopping or drive the kids to sport. People are defiantly wearing their Sharks gear despite all the stigma that it has at the monment and saying... "We're here, we're proud, and we aint gonna go away"

Keep fighting the good fight guys and gals!

The media manager is a bloke called Rob Willis. He's been there for about 8 or 9 years.

But I've heard that the Sharks media job is almost a volunteer role. You get paid more working at Woolies.

As they saying goes "You pay peanuts, you get monkeys"

(BTW: This is in no way having a shot at Rob Willis who I've never met and have no idea of his work)

And most of his time is spent writing the Shark Attack magazine, so in reality the media unit is non existent. And it probably wont change unless someone comes along with a bit of money to invest in the club.
