Anyone been watching the ice hockey at the Winter Olympics? How good is it? I love this sport - it has everything; that special blend of skill, speed, power and outright brutality that so few sports outside of rugby league possess, makes for compelling viewing. If only we got to see more NHL on TV...:(

I have a passing interest in the Pittsburg Penguins... for obvious reasons. (And yes I know their's is technically a very dark navy blue not black.. but near enough)

It is certainly a collision sport as opposed to merely being a contact sport; I saw a massive hit by Alexander Ovechkin of Russia on Czech Jaromir Jagr during the preliminary rounds, which has since been taken off YouTube due to copyright violation, but you can see more big hits from the same player here.

Benji Marshall has just signed a big contract extension by NRL standards (4 yrs at $2 million), but this guy Ovechkin signed an NHL record 13 year contract extension with the Washington Capitals in 2008, for a sum of USD$124 million!

Anaheim Ducks

Im not a fan of NHL and I dont know to much about the rules. I still like to watch it though, its great when its free flowing, that Russia V Canada game was great.

As to teams, Ill have to say I got a soft spot for the Anaheim Ducks, Since I loved the "Mighty Ducks" movies when I was a kid, I may still enjoy them now.

Been loving the Olympic ice hockey. Like the NHL too and agree there should be more of it on Fox. Don't see enough of it to really call myself a supporter, but I'm fond of the Detroit Red Wings.

haha one of my teams has to lol

When I watch NHL I don't care who wins. But it seems if the Red Wings are playing, I back them, so I guess that classes them as 'my team'. Probably cause we get limited NHL coverage over here, and they're a successful team they get more exposure. Like the Broncos, Man U, Chicago Bulls of the 90's etc.

Haha, I understand that pain a little to well, not one of my sport teams did any good last year, not even the gridiron team I play on and we were champions last year!

I the same with you don't have a team watch it for the enjoyment, but if the ducks are on I want to see them win, its not like I follow the stats to see if the win week in and week out. **** that I can't handle the pain of another losing team haha.

I back the Penguins in the NHL and I'm gunning for the Canadians to take out the Gold in the Olympics. Big fan of Sid "The Kid" Crosby, Jordan Staal and Evgeni Malkin to name a few.

Slovakia v Canada in the semi today was a pretty exciting game. Especially the finish. Hope they beat the Yanks

Hey guys
You guys should get out and watch a game of the Australian Ice Hockey League, its not the NHL or Olympic hockey but it is half decent. ( www.theaihl.com ) is the website.
I have been watching the Hockey, every game as i got the olympics package on Fox just for the hockey, i play ice hockey and i am a huge fan of the sport and have been for about 15 years, the AIHL final was broadcast on Foxtel last year and now with the new awsome Ice hosue in Melbourne, hopefully ice hockey in Australia will get more attention.

I once attended a San Jose Sharks game on a trip to the U.S. Surprisingly entertaining.

I go for the Sharks for namesake. Watched them live. That they were better than average was a pleasant bonus:)

i was never into NHL untill my ex forced it apon me canadian/aussie girl...love it now. san-jose for me....
to start with i never even knew where that was haha....(cali)
this year was an awsome series for the west coast with sharks up against my ex's team the canucks....sadly sharks went down...an canucks are now fighting it out with the bruins for the stainley shield......its funny player burnout is all over the NRL at the mo. but the amount of games these NHL games play is insane....sometimes 4 game days back to back....serious stuff.....

I'm over in Canada now (Sadly not able to go to a game) and had that exact same thought the other day. The playoff games are on every third day at the moment and a player can go through 80-odd games a year and I'd say ice hockey games are much faster and can be a lot heavier than league games. While back home league players/agents/associations are on about players burning out playing 30 or so games a year.
