How does the 2016 Cronulla Sharks compare to the Sharks of the past?

Breaking the record last week would suggest that this years team is the best ever.

Also a record for most players in a blues side with 5. Would be 6 origin players if Holmes was available and 7 if NSW had a clue and picked ennis

I like the old days but this side has the chance to be the best if they win the Grand Final. If they do then they are the best.

73 and 78 and 97 made the GF to fall just short.

With even luck this team could make it. Need to wait for the results before we call it.

Realistically what matters is if the team is better than the other 15 teams as opposed to the teams of the past.

As for the teams of the 70s, thankfully that is the stuff of warriors as I'm not that old, and winning in 97 would have meant a half premiership in reality. This is the year. It is there for the taking. If we don't make the grand final from here (assuming no injuries) then we have fallen away badly.

We had some great players in the past but I think that this is the best balanced team. No ifs, no buts, no maybes - this team has talent, heart, confidence, good leadership and depth.
Actually my biggest concern is that the veteran guys, like Gal, knowing that this is their best chance to go all the way, will over-react if something goes wrong in the finals.

The big question is:

Can we do it again next year?

History suggests we can't. And without Ennis I don't think we can.

But interestingly at today's fan day, Rob Willis almost pleaded with Mick to stay on again. All good fun but Ennis didn't come and say no. In fact, he didn't say a word.

So without Ennis next year, no we can't do it.

With him, it's a different kettle of fish and I think we can.

Sorry to disagree but except for Ennis we aren't really losing anyone else that will make to big a difference, yes it might be harder but Ennis leaving does not disqualify us from winning next year.

You would have to say they are the best comeplete team ever. Teams of the past may have had some of the best individuals ever or even groups of individuals but as a whole team - well they have to be the best.

Can we build a dynasty team around some of younger players now. Graham, Bird, Val, Luetelle, Fifita(if he can manage to stay out of trouble for that long ) Prior might have 3-4 left in him, perhaps Capewell and the juniors coming through like Jayden Brailey.... Can we become a Storm, Broncos, Roosters type club.... That's the question and the that is when we can say it the greatest team ever and the greatest era ever.

Off the field it would certainly appear that we are headed for our greatest financial era's ever.......

Well we won the holly grail which has taken decades for others to try and achieve unsuccessfully, so yes we are the best team.

Time to call it. This is the best Sharkies side ever and Gal deserves credit for his leadership and courage.

I started watching The Sharks in 1988. I would rank them...

2016 (I still don't think I believe it!!!)
2001 (I still think this team wins the comp with a fit Dykes in the lineup)
1988 (team goes much closer with a healthy Barry Russell)
1999 (best team on paper but the team's above were better all around IMO)
1997 (I know we usually ignore Super League, but this was a stacked lineup)
2002 (again - losing a key playmaker in Johns was a big factor)

I don't really rate the 2008 team. We were just the "the best of the rest" in a comp where Melbourne and Manly were light years ahead of everyone
