Warriors signed him to a pricey contract. Wouldn't surprise me if they would try and offload him to another club that is desperate for outside backs (hint CRONULLA SHARKS)

Good point

We'd be on par with them if we had a strike centre like Shaun Kenny-Dowall and a halfback who gets his team around the park as well as Pearce does. But we don't.

I couldnt find the matthew wright thread so Ill just write it here.

This guy was a HIGHLY regarded junior year? Are we talking Australian School boys?

Does anyone else think Matty could really have a big 2012 now he has some descent halves?

Everyone keeps going on how we have no strike out wide , but have we ever had good halves that give the outside men a chance?

We have Kelly and if you look at round 2 he even sets up Poms for a huge break and it ends up as a try.

I think with a combination of Carney and Kelly our young outside backs like Wright , Mills and Leutele will have a big season.

SKD is great centre I really like his running from dummy half. In 2010 with Carney in form he scored 21 tries and in 2011 with Carney in and out of the team he scored 9 the same as Pomeroy. Maybe SKD's try scoring plummeting down is a coincidence with Carney not playing as much

Just a thought...

We have had some greats in our 3 and 4 shirts.

I've always been of the opinion that 2, 3 4 & 5 look fantastic if they've got a good 9, 13, 6, 7 and 1.

At the same time, I don't want to discount the involvement of the 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12.

Having a good bench is imperitive too.

Ok, so you guys will read that with a narky, "Well, that's the whole team you dufous!" and that is exactly the point I am trying to make.

The way the Sharks have achieved success in the past is via a complimentary balance across the park. It wasn't a matter of having this player or that player in key positions - it was about having a team whose individual playing styles brought the best out of each other.

What we're looking for is not y + x ... we're looking for y to the power of x

That is when the X-factor becomes significant.

In 2009 Kenny Dowell was just a really speedy winger, when Carney came along, he became the games best center.

I totally agree with this post.

I think it suits our current roster very well too. We have the forwards that can lay the platform for our spine to create opportunities. It all comes down to the youngsters in 2-5 taking those chances and developing into quality NRL-level players. Guys like Mills, Wright, Leutele need to step up this year!

I agree with the above. But regardless of the players around them, more than any other player, centres needs to be able to beat their man one on one. Plus, you'll find our halves start looking a bit more glamourous (even sans Carney) when they have some handy blokes to pass to.

And to be honest, getting good ball to your outside men should be a given in a game where the defensive line is sent back a 10m every time someone's tackled.

One key centre would change our side completely and really make us contenders. Whether that's Wright or Mills stepping up or someone outside the Club- I don't mind.

In 2009 Kenny Dowell was just a really speedy winger, when Carney came along, he became the games best center.

Correlation does not equal causation.

We have Paul gallen , Todd carney and Nathan Gardner. All we need:p

finally a postive post on this thread, i think we will have our best season in years. even though we finished outside the 8 last year, the majority of the games we lost were by small margins, having a guy like carney in the team should mean we should be able to convert some of these narrow losses into wins. carney also is not the only improvnment in our team, we have a much stronger bench.
degois is a big upgrade on aiton. plus carney,s kicking game is a big plus. i think we will make top 8, maybe even top 4 & from there anything can happen.

i think our team has a much better forward pack, i think the roosters may have had a better back line. so i guess the teams are strong in different areas. but the question remains can we emulate the roosters & make the grand final or hopefully win the grand final? what do you guys think?

Emulate the Roosters? In 2009 they were wooden spooners. 2010 they also sported a new coach.

Lets not think bout the Grand final. Lets think about running onto the pitch in round 1 with the fittest, strongest, most well conditioned sharks squad we possibly can. Worry bout september if we make it there.

Its not about copying people, or how our squad compares with another. On the day, either team can win

Put Mills and Wright into the centres and we are looking great with Carney, Chad, Gards!

No to Wright. I'd prefer to see Mills and Leutele. I'd actually prefer Pom over Wright

Neither of these options would've change what happened in 2011 - far from it. In fact I reckon that would've been worse.

This year, with Carney in the halves, you have to let the more experienced blokes play there first up.

It would be a different story If our experienced guys where actually decent.

Get some experience for Pickerd because he will be the custodian for Best's center position IMO
