Seeing it live I thought it was an obvious obstruction.

Even if you take Hughes out of it, McDonald was obstructed. If he is able to push across there it remains a 3 on 3.

Was McDonald going to get Luai? Probably not, but he deserves the opportunity. If Luai beats Hughes then straightens and makes a line break outside McDonald it is play on. He didn't do that though. He ran behind his own player and then made use of the advantage it gave him. If McDonald had taken 3 quick steps and ploughed into Lindsay Smith it wouldn't have even required the bunker.

100% the correct call for mine. Only reason fans are blowing up is because some obvious ones like this have been let go in the past.
I’d be interested to see a side and back view simultaneously side by side.

To me it looks like Hughes has clear opportunity to get to Luai and tried to make it something that it wasn’t (as they all do), and there are NO players around being impeded or forced to change direction to try to get to Luai as a result of the runner running through, and I question if McDonald was impeded as it looks like he just jogged along as he was normally doing.

Im still not convinced this is not a **** call.

These are not the only criteria for something to be considered obstruction. If you run behind your own bloke and the defence has to make an adjustment they wouldn't have done otherwise, it doesn't matter if nobody was within 10m of Luai. It's obstruction. When he does that he puts himself at the mercy of the obstruction rules.

McDonald certainly didn't push across as hard as he could have. If Luai had run into the the space outside of Smith in this situation he might have an argument that McDonald's lack of urgency there is a defensive decision. Bloody lazy Catholic school boy!

I'm sure training session #1 for McDonald this week was how to milk obstruction penalties by sprinting into the lead runner and swan diving backwards.

I'm happy for all future situations like this to be a penalty, but I agree it's not consistent with some that have been let go in the past - so can understand fans being confused and/or upset.

Speaking of inconsistent obstructions, felt like over the weekend we saw one or two where the ball carrier accidentally went behind his own man and so stopped
and then after starting to look like he's just conceding, throw a pass.

I'm sure you weren't allowed to do this last year and passing was deemed to have still taken advantage.

Yeah. Can't remember those instances but that should be a penalty.

Also saw one or two where that happened, the ref yelled "surrender" and the guy was allowed to get a quick ptb. That also shouldn't be allowed.

Yeh they should make it like the old days at training - you have to drop down and do a push up before playing the ball!

lol.

Sit down Walker you tosser.

Potentially they’ll play better now without that flog on the field.

Reynolds dropped that on purpose so he could run up to the ref and signal sin bin
