The way the clock runs in general when the ball is not in play is stupid.

NRL needs to change to be like the NHL, play stops as soon as the puck isn't in play.

The amount of wasted time in the NRL is crap.
Yeah that's what the AFL does as well. I agree with you, needs to happen.

It would look kinda stupid if play continued when the puck isn’t in play ;)

Stopped clock for any ball out of play isn’t the way to go, but I agree that the stoppage time hasn’t gotten ridiculous. NRL games go for around 105-110 minutes from kickoff to final whistle, and roughly 40 minutes of that is action.

Also have to keep in mind all of the “delay of game” rules they had to introduce later on in hockey to keep teams from deliberately stopping the clock. If you were to introduce a radical rule change like that, teams/coaches would figure out a way to game the system, and we would spend the next ten years adding new rules to fix what we broke.

Yeah is considering time off for certain things, but not everything. The shot clock ones annoy me. If we are going to countdown 30s of rest it shouldn't come off the clock too. But the big one for me conversions shouldn't come off. It would add much more theater to the end of game too. If you score with any time on the clock, you know the other side is going to get a chance to kick off and there will be at least one more play.

I'd have to check but it felt like the clock ticked on for around 50 seconds when Latrell was taking the conversion. Ridiculous.

If they can’t get the Bunker, MRC and tribunal right, then why do we think that the official match timer would be any different?

Yeah we definitely get it wrong. Nba do theatre so well. They go back to put time back on the clock if it's been run down wrong just to create those moments.

Imagine a team is down by 10 with and score with 3 seconds left. Kick the goal, get the ball back and go the length to win. What a moment that would be.

It would encourage more games to go till the death. Wouldn't happen frequently, but damn it would be worth it when it does.

I've been saying it for ****ing years, fans don't pay to go watch some **** wind down the clock lining up a conversion - stop the clock as soon as ball is out of play and bring back draws

80 mins a week of actual footy ball in play isn't too much too ask

Yeah something needs to happen but it won't.

I'd be up for reducing halves to something like 35 minutes but the clock stops whenever the ball is out of play.

I saw some old rule from a previous season that they have 80 seconds to kick, don’t know what it is now: https://www.nrl.com/news/2014/01/26/clock-to-stop-under-rule-changes/

I don’t want any more stoppages though, most games go for too long already with all the video reviews, and I prefer the old way where you win in the first 75 minutes rather than the last 5 minutes…. but just be consistent on the time allowed,

Yeah I think it's still similar with that time to kick a conversion.

I get what you're saying, but the last second moments are what creates theatre, and sells the sport. How many times have we seen that JT grand final conversion despite the miss. Everything on the line at the end of the game creates incredible drama. I do admit, it's less for the purists though.

I also get that you can't simply just get rid of all stoppages though. As Burgo mentioned earlier, ball in play time is typically less than 50 minutes per game. Adding an extra 30 would have unforeseen repercussions.

I'm surprised the game doesn't stop for ad breaks

I don't think the coverage these days is too bad. Imagine trying to watch a game back in the old days like a few of us on here had to do. Sometimes there'd be no coverage at all, you'd have to listen to Frank Hyde and get the updates from around the grounds during the main game. Sometimes I used to hang out waiting to hear which game Frank would call and hoping it was a Sharks one.

Watching Rex Mossop on Channel 7 and 10 all those years ago was pretty painful - he would yell with excitement when Manly scored but not so much other teams.

I know we expect so much more in the modern world but I don't think there is anything too wrong with the coverage at the moment.

Used to love Around the Grounds listening to the radio on a Sunday afternoon.

Only way of knowing how the Sharks were going a lot of the time.

This is something that exists in other sports. NHL has scheduled breaks twice per period where the players stand around scratching their balls while TV shows ads.
