Hearing this morning that Ricky wants to stop Trent Barrett from playing Rep Footy, can he do this?
Is this going to deter other players from signing with the Sharks on the off chance they may be restricted from playing Rep footy?

I cant see how Ricky can do this, and im not so sure he would have liked this being done to him when he was Australian Coach.

its just typical of him isnt it, what a pig of a man

why do you want sharks playing rep footy?

rep football cost the storm a premiership in 08, You wouldnt want the risk of that happening to us.

a premiership or a handful of "rep stars?"I know which Id much rather

I can see both sides of this, if our players are picked then they would quite rightly be ecstatic to represent their state or country as ricky was.
Ricky would be pleased to see these players picked as he knows how good they are and how much pride they would have in playing for their state/country.
But as far as the club is concerned he'd prefer them out of harms way, a well earned break, some training , Christmas & then an awesome soul inspiring pre- season, where the mighty Sharks are feared by all!!!

One of the biggest problems is compensation for the club this isn't just about the sharks this is about all players in rep teams.

Lets have little think about this Barret gets injured 9 months to say recover Gallen does his shoulder again and it takes 6 months to recover yet we still have to pay them even though they were in injured playing for state or country.

They are still under the salary cap so we cant find replacements nor can we use the money under the salary cap to bring a younger players up and give them bonuses to play in the NRL.

This is a drain on the club and costs money who is covering the medical costs the training of the players etc and really it is stupid and unfair especially on some of the other teams like Broncos/Cowboys/Storm.

The ARL/NRL should cover all costs to a club if a player is injured that includes whatever money the club has to pay them as a player its really that simple.

I understand what ricky is saying Barret at his age is an injury risk for us as is Gallen this just pushes up the odds of us losing them even more so.

Its wrong the ARL/NRL takes so much and gives very little back to any teams.

Food for thought Willy - perhaps it should work like a "custody" model.

That is... if the player is injured or suspended, then the costs associated with the rehabilitation and return of the player are the responsibility of whoever had "custody" of the player at the time. A bit like pass-the-parcel I know, but there really should be more responsibility and accountability taken by whoever is utilising the services of the player at the time.

As far as the impact on the team.... unfortunately the game has become a 25 person squad game and all teams have to recruit with the concept of "depth" in mind . You really can't rest all your hopes in just one or two elite players.

Just have a look at old team photos and compare them to ones today. In the old days they used to just show the top 13 players, the coach, manager and ballboy. Nowadays it seems everyone with an association to the Club is in the team photo.

Anyway, it's obviously a difficult thing to administer but we're pretty good at resolving difficult problems around here.

I like the sound of the "Custody" model that's for sure it works for me maybe email it to RIcky if he isn't already plagiarising your idea at this very moment (its happened before lol but I didn't mind Ricky :covell:).it really Fitz (sorry bad humour) but I am sure the ARL/NRL wont like it if they have to pay up some $$$.

We are I am sure of that.
