Hearing this morning that Ricky wants to stop Trent Barrett from playing Rep Footy, can he do this?
Is this going to deter other players from signing with the Sharks on the off chance they may be restricted from playing Rep footy?

I cant see how Ricky can do this, and im not so sure he would have liked this being done to him when he was Australian Coach.

I can understand his feelings but it would start a dangerous trend if club coaches started ruling out their players imagine if bellamy or henjack started ruling players .
You are right master sharky if anyone had done that when ricky was coaching the kanagroos he would of blown up

That surprises me because Ricky has always been a strong advocate of rep footy.

I think it is written in the NRL contract that players must be available for rep footy, but they can apply for an exemption if they are getting towards the end of their career.

I’m not sure whether Ricky actually has the power to stop Trent from playing, but I reckon if he told Trent that he didn’t want him to play he would be able to persuade him. If this is the case, then he probably should have had a private word behind closed doors.

i think this was just ricky venting his frustration... he has no power to restrict trent - but also theres no way Trent will be selected for the aust team.. he isnt an incumbent - nor the stand out 5/8 in the league... and no Aust coach will select a 5/8 for a end of season tour when he hasnt played for the last 6-8 weeks...just wont happen...

take this for what its worth - Ricky showing his frustation - i hope he funnel's it into next season an we have a red hot crack.... i've had enough re-building years!

I know Ricky is worried that Barrett will do a knee or something and miss the first half of next season, but let's be honest here. If he was to make the Aussie team he'd be playing against sides that aren't really any better than any NRL side. He'd be playing for the best team in the world. He'd get some great confidence building experience coming back from an injury that would have surely got him down in the dumps.

It could honestly be a good thing for the Sharks. Represent your country and then go into the off season full of confidence that next year can be different.

I basically think there's benefits either way. Knowing our luck we could fight to have Barrett excluded from rep footy only to see him get a similar injury to kearney or ross in game one next year.

We can't **** with fate basically.

all Ricky did was ask baz to make himself unavailable for end of season aussie tour which he was unlikely to make anyway has he would not have played for so long by the time the team is picked.baz has agreed to make himself unavailable for this tour. this will ensure baz has a full off season prior to next years nrl season and baz will still be available for blues next year.

rep footy is a joke and completely unprofessional. It should be held at post season, in october, then it would be completely appropriate.

I completely support ricky trying to hold players back from SOO.

Spoken like a true Victorian. The notion of international football is complete foreign to you. ;)

Does anyone really think barrett will be in the top 25 players being taken to the end of season overseas tour?

I may be going a little of topic here.
I believe Ricky wants Baz around to settle AK in here at Cronulla, I did mention on another thread that AK idolised Baz growing up and that AK needs a father like mentor at Cronulla like he does at Parra. Who better than Baz?

No - most people are forgetting that here... after 6 weeks off he wont be considered...

alot of talk bout Barret being a mentor for A Kelly....... here's my prediction -

Barret will sign a 1 year extension next year and stay until 2011....alot of 2 year contracts been signed so far byour recruits...2011 will be the year we have a shot... Barret will want in on that!!

A coach shouldn't be allowed to intervene between his players rep footy. I know how Ricky must feel, how we ALL feel for that matter, but he needs to let it slide. Barrett is arguebly one of the best halves in the game at the moment (who doesn't recieve much recognition because of the bottom of the ladder Sharkies :( ), he should be out there representing his country.

I would understand Ricky asking Baz to rethink it in person. But publicy announcing he'll be stopping him? Silly call.

I don't think Stick has the right to stop Barrett playing in the Quad series at the end of the season.

No. He doesn't. I don't think he woudl have been picked though. It's not just 6-8 weeks off. There are 7 rounds left in the regular season PLUS the finals. That's 10-12 weeks without a game. No way he would get picked anyway.

Gidley will definitely be there - he'san option at 5/8 if Lockyer is hurt. They may also pick a 3rd half (Prince??) to cover an injury to either Lokyer or Thurston. I don't think Baz fits in to that squad unless Lockyer is unavailable.
