The biggest thing with wingers is you dont just look at tries scored. It would be a no-brainer if thats how they were selected. Nor can they just look at run meters.
Wingers do a fair bit in a game, and its this misconception of how many tries they can score etc as to how good they can be. Our wingers havent scored 8 tries in 8 rounds, **** all our wingers combined havent put 8 tries up. So teams score by attacking the wing ALOT. Look at teams like Newy, Dogs and Souths. Those sweeping plays, like what Boyd,Cooper and Morris used to put together, the team structure and set plays are putting wingers over. A team with these plays can have big try scorers out wide, no because of individual skill, but cos of the quality of play.
Merrit half falls into that category, many of his tries come from great balls from his other blokes, but also some good solo play too. He does the work off the ball, and helps bring the ball back up from dummy half too. Usually does alright in defence too
