Dayne Weston has been in good form for the Burleigh Bears, earning a full-time deal with the Titans
BURLEIGH Bears prop Dayne Weston has double reason to celebrate his Queensland Country selection this weekend after being offered a full-time deal with the Gold Coast Titans for 2011.
After moving his young family to the Coast this year from Townsville in search of greater NRL opportunity, the 23-year-old yesterday said he was ecstatic that the leap of faith had paid off.
"They always said there could be an opportunity there and it seems to have come through," said Weston.
"They have offered me a full-time gig for next year. That was one of my main aims of coming down here this year, to back myself to get back into the system.
"Nothing is done in concrete yet but they have put that forward and if it all works out it will be good."
Weston, who stands 190cm tall and weighs 105kg, made his NRL debut for Cronulla in 2007 as a 20-year-old.
He played 10 games for the Sharks before linking with the Cowboys in 2008, playing 21 matches for North Queensland, but just two appearances last season.
He has been one of the Bears' best this season.
Weston will start in the front row for Country when they do battle with City in the annual Queensland Residents selection trial in Gympie today.
He represented both Country and Residents last season and said he was again determined to earn selection for the clash against NSW Residents in Sydney on July 7 in the curtain raiser to Origin 3.
"This is a good opportunity to play against the best in the Queensland Cup," he said.
"A good performance individually and as a team can send you on to higher things with Residents selection..
"It was awesome last year to get the opportunity to play on the big stage in front of Origin."
The Gold Coast has six players in the Queensland Country side.
They others are Tanu Wulf (Burleigh), Shannon Walker (Tweed), Ryan Simpkins (Tweed), Selasi Berdie (Tweed) and Brad Davis (Tweed), who will captain the side.
IN THE Gold Coast Bycroft Cup, Runaway Bay Seagulls are confident the loss of halfback Jeremy Golf for the season will not derail their campaign.
After fending off Tugun, the Bay face their second crunch match in as many weeks when they take on the high-flying Bilambil Jets tomorrow.
Bilambil and Runaway Bay are unchanged with the Seagulls sticking with new halfback Teinia Pepe, who slotted in last week against Tugun for Golf, who has hung up the boots for personal reasons.
"Pepe looks like he will fit in well but it may take a bit of time," said Runaway Bay coach Michael Woods.
While Runaway Bay are chasing consistency, Bilambil coach Troy McCarthy said he remained very wary of the competition's quiet achievers.
"We have to be wary of Runaway Bay because they are a good side and like to shift the ball around and take advantage on the edges so we have to be strong in defence," he said.
Bilambil lead the club championship race on 296 points closely followed by Southport (288) and Runaway Bay (284) with Seagulls' president Graham Gleeson full of praise for head coach Woods.
"Woods has done a tremendous job this year greatly improving the attitude and discipline right throughout the club and it's showing on the scoreboard," said Gleeson.
Burleigh Heads are at home to Beaudesert today.
Tomorrow, South Tweed take on Ormeau, Hinterland tackle Tugun and Southport Tigers are host to Parkwood Sharks.
