NUTLEY GETS MATTERSON VOTE
By Ian Laybourn

Castleford coach Terry Matterson is pushing his captain fantastic Danny Nutley for the Super League Man of Steel award.

Wigan's Andy Platt was the last specialist prop forward to win the highly prestigious award back in 1993 but Matterson believes the former Warrington and Cronulla front rower has done enough to bridge that 13-year gap.

The annual award is presented to the personality who is adjudged to have made the most impact on a season.

"I've got no doubt he would be a good nomination," said Matterson.

"It's always easier when you're playing in a team that's going well.

"I've got a massive amount of respect for the guy. People don't understand what a good player he is. Skill-wise, he's certainly not there with the elite but you get every ounce of his ability and his heart and soul."

Great Britain full-back Paul Wellens is the current 11-4 favourite with William Hill to succeed his St Helens team-mate Jamie Lyon as Man of Steel, with another club colleague, Leon Pryce, and Leeds skipper Kevin Sinfield also highly fancied.

But Matterson believes that, rather than going for the eye-catching performers, the selection panel should consider the workhorses whose efforts often go unnoticed apart from by their team-mates.

"Danny missed the Challenge Cup game but he's played every single League game and, if it wasn't for me, he would have played every minute," said Matterson.

"He just doesn't want to come off. He's just a quality person.

"To be honest, he struggled at the start of the season with the captaincy. He tried to be someone he wasn't and I think the frustrations of where we were at the start of the season didn't help.

"But since he started being himself, he's been enormous. He's been as good as player I've been involved with. The crowd here appreciate him. I could speak about him all day."

Nutley, hugely influential in the Tigers' first season back in Super League, will be aiming to lead them to a crucial victory over Huddersfield at the Galpharm Stadium on Sunday.

Castleford are a point above the Giants and the victors on Sunday will be virtually guaranteed safety from relegation.

Wigan, too, will be looking to pull away from the drop zone when they visit Warrington, whose place in the play-offs has been undermined by a run of six defeats in seven matches.

The Warriors include the Wolves among their recent scalps but, if they are to make it six wins in a row, they need to take their home form on their travels.

"We'll face a pretty decent team and again it's in a vociferous environment," he said. "The Halliwell Jones is a good place to go and play rugby league.

"I'm sure we'll have another sizeable away following as we've had all year. It's a piece of grass and we've got to do certain things on this piece of grass that we've been doing at home."

NUTLEY TO QUIT TIGERS
By Andy Hampson

Castleford are to allow captain Danny Nutley to leave the club at the end of the season despite the player recently agreeing a new contract.

The 32-year-old Australian signed a two-year extension to Tigers contract earlier this summer but requested an early release to allow him to return home with his family for personal reasons.

The former Cronulla Sharks prop, who had a spell with Warrington from 1998-2001, has been linked with NRL club Sydney Roosters as a replacement for Warrington-bound Adrian Morley.

Nutley joined the Tigers following their promotion back to the engage Super League last year and has been one of their most influential players this season.

Nutley said: "After re-signing, the enormity of being here for another three years hit home, and after giving the matter a great deal of thought, as a family, we have decided to return home.

"It is with great regret that I have made this decision, especially after Terry (Matterson) bestowed upon me the great honour of captaining a club with such an illustrious history as the Tigers."

The Tigers are not yet clear of relegation trouble but have generally had a satisfactory first season back in Super League under new coach Matterson.

Matterson had started recruiting for next season by signing New Zealand international Awen Guttenbeil and Australia centre Sean Timmins but Nutley's loss is a major blow.

Tigers chief executive Richard Wright said: "We are very sorry to be losing Danny, his contribution to the club this year has been immense.

"However as a club we understand that factors away from the playing field sometimes have to be considered and that is the case with Danny.

"It would have been wrong to tie him to his contract and although we didn't want to lose him we wish him well for the future."

Castleford stunned by Nutley bombshell
Wednesday, 09 Aug 2006 17:00

Castleford Tigers have confirmed that their skipper Danny Nutley is to leave the club at the end of this Super League season.

Tigers chief executive Richard Wright revealed the 32-year-old Queenslander, who only joined the club in January, has expressed his desire to return to Australia.

"We are very sorry to be losing Danny, his contribution to the club this year has been immense," Wright said.

"However as a club we understand that factors away from the playing field sometimes have to be considered and that is the case with Danny.

"It would have been wrong to tie him to his contract and although we didn't want to lose him we wish him well for the future."

Nutley, formerly of South Queensland, Warrington and Cronulla Sharks, said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Castleford and will continue to give my very best over the remaining weeks of the season.

"I feel that the club has potentially a tremendous future and would have loved to have been part of that. However at times other factors have to be considered, and family matters, for example my young children's schooling, are of great importance to me."

Tigers coach Terry Matterson will be disappointed to be losing such a key player, particularly after he agreed a three-year contract extension only a matter of weeks ago.

Castleford are currently in ninth place in the Super League table and will find it tough to replace Nutley next season.End of story

Where is Nutley going?

Nuts has been granted a release by Castleford and is coming back to Oz. I dont think the Sharks could afford him - somehow I dont think he'd want to return to Toyota Park anyway - so where will he go? Are the roosters his most likely option. Anyone heard anything?

I live for the Sharks
Are we trying to win premierships or a popularity contest?

Why would we want to bring back players to the club who we couldnt win premierships with when they were here originally, gee talk about taking one step forward two steps backwards.

as great as nuts was for cronulla, i dont think we need to be signing 32 year old props. ive heard plenty of times on this site that we should give our younger guys a go, and i beleive that if we are gonna free up cap sapce, we should buy sumone with potential, not reputation

All the mail is that the Roosters have been chasing Nutts for a while which is why Castleford extended his contract. This doesn't mean he has signed with the Roosters and hopefully Pierce will make an effort to obtain a guy we should have not let go!!

I agree let Nutley go to Roosters.

I would much rather develop a new and upcoming Luke Douglas with at least 5-6 yrs out of him then Nutley at 32 who maybe has 2 but probably 1. Buying him is another band aid solution. Not that there is anything wrong with him at all, just got to think bigger and better.

We do not retain juniors because we do not look after them. That is a management issue, hence I say again, PISS THEM ALL OFF and get a BUSINESSMEN.

As Nulla Nulla said in another thread, NRL is a multi-million dollar business, not De La or Gymea A grade.
