NUTLEY GETS MATTERSON VOTE
By Ian Laybourn
Castleford coach Terry Matterson is pushing his captain fantastic Danny Nutley for the Super League Man of Steel award.
Wigan's Andy Platt was the last specialist prop forward to win the highly prestigious award back in 1993 but Matterson believes the former Warrington and Cronulla front rower has done enough to bridge that 13-year gap.
The annual award is presented to the personality who is adjudged to have made the most impact on a season.
"I've got no doubt he would be a good nomination," said Matterson.
"It's always easier when you're playing in a team that's going well.
"I've got a massive amount of respect for the guy. People don't understand what a good player he is. Skill-wise, he's certainly not there with the elite but you get every ounce of his ability and his heart and soul."
Great Britain full-back Paul Wellens is the current 11-4 favourite with William Hill to succeed his St Helens team-mate Jamie Lyon as Man of Steel, with another club colleague, Leon Pryce, and Leeds skipper Kevin Sinfield also highly fancied.
But Matterson believes that, rather than going for the eye-catching performers, the selection panel should consider the workhorses whose efforts often go unnoticed apart from by their team-mates.
"Danny missed the Challenge Cup game but he's played every single League game and, if it wasn't for me, he would have played every minute," said Matterson.
"He just doesn't want to come off. He's just a quality person.
"To be honest, he struggled at the start of the season with the captaincy. He tried to be someone he wasn't and I think the frustrations of where we were at the start of the season didn't help.
"But since he started being himself, he's been enormous. He's been as good as player I've been involved with. The crowd here appreciate him. I could speak about him all day."
Nutley, hugely influential in the Tigers' first season back in Super League, will be aiming to lead them to a crucial victory over Huddersfield at the Galpharm Stadium on Sunday.
Castleford are a point above the Giants and the victors on Sunday will be virtually guaranteed safety from relegation.
Wigan, too, will be looking to pull away from the drop zone when they visit Warrington, whose place in the play-offs has been undermined by a run of six defeats in seven matches.
The Warriors include the Wolves among their recent scalps but, if they are to make it six wins in a row, they need to take their home form on their travels.
"We'll face a pretty decent team and again it's in a vociferous environment," he said. "The Halliwell Jones is a good place to go and play rugby league.
"I'm sure we'll have another sizeable away following as we've had all year. It's a piece of grass and we've got to do certain things on this piece of grass that we've been doing at home."
