It is very simple.

The Club's survival is dependent on the support of a number of groups including fans, members, the community and importantly sponsors.

The facts are there will be negative, discontent within the community until complete new elections are called, voted and the best management team put forward - this ain't rock science ladies and gents

Until there's a clean slate with 100% community support then there's buckley's of a big sponsor putting up their bucks - would you??? I'm not convinced.

It's time to stop playing petty politics and focus on the end result.

New board seeks support as Irvine to keep Pierce promise
BY BRAD FORREST
2/07/2009 1:54:00 PM
NEW Cronulla Sharks chairman, businessman Damian Irvine, said the club would ask for a members' vote of confidence in the club's new board of directors at another general meeting of members on August 6.

If members do not endorse the board, the club will have to call another general meeting to elect a new board.

With the Sharks' football team's fortunes on the field revived by young blood over the past two months, it has emerged that a Sydney banker is among three women vying for a position on the board.

One vacancy has opened up, with long-reigning chairman, Barry Pierce, stepping down to be replaced by Irvine, his deputy, at the board meeting on Tuesday night, while two other members are believed to be considering their positions. Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club president Greg Holland withdrew his nomination for the chairmanship in order to support Irvine.

Irvine's appointment follows the recent appointments of new board faces Ricky Surace, Paul Walker, and Craig Douglas, as well as chief executive Richard Fisk. With the controversies of the past three months behind them, the Sharks want to show a united front before mid-August, when Sutherland Shire Council is expected to examine the development application for the club's $110 million Sharks Village concept.

Irvine, a company director involved in thoroughbred breeding, property investment, five-star service consultancy, and retail, is also a founding member of the Sharks fan club, Cronulla Sutherland Supporters Club (CSSC).

"I am a Cronulla Sharks supporter, passionate and totally committed to seeing the club's best interests are taken care of,'' he said. Irvine said that although under the constitution the board could not call a new election, putting a resolution to members was "honouring the promise [Barry Pierce] made to allow members to have their say''.

"It is important during this rebuilding period that all members have a voice and that it is heard,'' Irvine said.

Yesterday afternoon, Sharks' sponsor and shire businesswoman, Madeline Tynan, indicated she may reconsider putting her name up for a board position.

"I would have serious difficulties ...accepting an 'appointment', rather than being elected by members to the board,'' she said.

Pfffft Madeline may reconsider what a load of rubbish she has had weeks to make up her mind.

We have three women vying for the position well that's good news as long as the pick the best suited for the club I will be very happy.

Fitz have you forwarded your resume yet I am sure they will look it over considering your degrees and marketing experience.(ps I am not having a poke I actually think you should if you think you could do good for the club)

See you in two years then!

Pretty hard to argue against that but hopefully the constitution requires a fair 51% in favour/ against? Could any of the new constitutionally aware please advise?

So moving forward, time for all members to make a decision in August to put their hand up to vote and if so be it, other alternatives to put their team and business plan together.

The focus of the vote is then whether the current board is the best team to move the Sharks forward and not a question of how blue, black and white your blood is and getting mates in power.

Have no doubt the road ahead for the Sharks (and the NRL) is not an easy one, every bad bit of publicity or poor experience is another nail in the coffin - there are continual multiple threats to the game we love and the greatest risk is community apathy and dropping audience attention.

The sooner this issue is resolved we can then focus on rebuilding community engagement, the Sharks brand value, sponsorship and winning a grand final before we die!

I have no doubt the current board is certainly more capable than the previous.

If you want a copy of the constitution ring the club and get one I am sure they will be happy to help out a club member.

Are you saying that people are currently being appointed to the board because they are mates and not on their merits if so what makes you think that please tell.

I Agree and I think some will be very surprised at what actions the new board has already has taken to sure up our future in the short time they have been on the Board.

Frankly, the issue is not about the past, I think we've all had a gut full of that! The focus is on the right now and future.

Yes, the current board have made changes and steps in the right direction (IMHO) - that's a given.

As a member personally not interested in problems just solutions - a short, clear strategic overview of how the problems will be fixed, when, how much and by whom.

Any vote then based purely on the merits, resources and capabilities to deliver end results.

For anyone in a privileged position of office - the question should always be - is this the best I/ we can do for the challenge ahead?

If there are other options on the table then let's see them. No point betting on a one horse race.

I'm assuming that this is Damian "D man" Irvine from the CSSC ... congratulations to him. He's a good bloke, as passionate a Sharks man as I've ever met and his professionalism and attitute has always impressed me when I've gone to games with the CSSC.

Financial crisis driving child sex tourism
By Esther Han
26-Sep-2009

A US study has found that sex offenders from Australia are a big part of the problem in Thailand.

The global financial crisis has hit hard at the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and child protection agencies that fight child sex crimes in South East Asia.

Funds are running low, and the child sex tourism industry has boomed.

Now a US study has found that sex offenders from Australia are a big part of the problem in Thailand.

A report from the Protection Project at Johns Hopkins University found that sex offenders from Australia topped the list of foreigners involved in child sex tourism in Thailand.

Its executive director, Mohamed Mattar, says the economic downturn means plenty of cheap flights and more children and women living under the poverty line.

"We found that casual tourism and business is part of the problem. So you have a businessman, he goes abroad, and then he would like to have some sex on the side, and he would maybe go for younger boys or girls," he said.

Child sex trafficking may be booming, but donations to NGOs are not.

The Cambodian Children's Painting Project is one of 450 NGOs in Cambodia struggling to survive the global financial crisis, as manager Felix Brooks-Church explains.

"We're an art-based project working with about 100 of these children and our whole focus is to use art as therapy and also as a means to get them off the beach, alternative income and into schools with full sponsorship," he said.

"Our donations have really dropped. We run on a budget of about $3,000 a month and that feeds over 100 kids, schools them. That [has] probably dropped down to $2,000 if not less."

The project has just launched a paintings roadshow in Australia to boost their funds.

"What's remarkable about this piece, and more so the artist, is Sok Piset is 15 years old but he is extremely mentally handicapped, probably learning and acting like a five-year-old," Mr Brooks-Church said.

"But he is able to create these works of art that surpass - as far as abstract and impressionism - surpasses any of the other children."

Cronulla Sharks chairman Damian Irvine was auctioneer at the charity event.

"We should be more charitable in the harshest financial climate, as opposed to cutting back. That is where you must expend all your assets," he said.

Laws

Mohammad Mattar says Australia's law against child sex tourism could be more effective if it is fully implemented.

"The problem is that you're talking about a trans-national crime, you're talking about a distance, you're talking about sex crime, you're talking about a crime that involves children and all these are very complicating factors when you want to prosecute cases of child sex tourism," he said.

But Bernadette McMenamin, the CEO of Child Wise Australia, says the law is not good enough.

She is lobbying the Federal Government to introduce amendments, which include higher penalties for preparatory offences.

"These changes include preparing to travel overseas to sexually abuse a child; so if there is firm evidence, witness, flight tickets. It also includes grooming a child for the purposes of sexual exploitation overseas," she said.

"So we are focusing on the prevention before the sexual acts happen."

Sydney art lover Justine Carter was the winning bidder at the auction, buying Sok Piset's painting for $1,300.

"It is absolutely beautiful and personally I think I got a bargain. Knowing the history and what happened behind it, that money can go to that child and go to that community and it's just absolutely fantastic," she said.

But the extent of the problem is so broad it will take a lot more auctions and many more donations to keep the fight against child sex tourism in Cambodia going.

An Open Letter from Sharks Chairman, Damian Irvine to Sharksforever.com

Sharks, Sharks Forever!

Words that raise the heartrate of anyone who shares the common bond we all do!

For as long as I can remember, seeing Black White and that special shade of Sky Blue mixed together, has caused my eyes to mist over and images of David Hatch fighting on despite a hanging shoulder, Gavin Miller belting into another brick wall in sacrifice only so he could slip the ball inside to his support, and brutal short side clashes as Dane Sorensen grabbed a precious metre, come to mind as if it were yesterday.

These were the times, the smells, the sounds and the images that my father unwittingly was imprinting into my build every weekend during my years as a young kid, and if the boys were playing away, we'd sit and listen to ABC on a Saturday and wait for the around the grounds scores to see how we were faring! Probably sounds a lot like most of you, eh?

Replace a name or two and it could be any number of Sharks fans and Sharksforever members.

The unique ownership that being a Sharks person gives us is our greatest asset as a club, I'm sure many of you have bumped into people around Australia or overseas and have perked up when discovering another like minded Shark in your midst! Or maybe seen a piece of Sharks merch on someone and gone and said hello and shared your stories, histories and memories, always ending with a "we'll get em next year!"

The Sharksforever website brings all of that together in one place, that nostalgia and that mateship and solidarity among "sharks" of all ages and backgrounds, and the work and effort that has gone into providing us with a leading online database and source of information is remarkable and a great credit to everyone involved.

We're on the way up again as a club and in my short time here I've quickly seen how obvious it is that our greatest assets, our real strength and what sets us apart from other clubs, is you. The people who every day think of the Sharks, who every day care about the club, our people and our future.

There is plenty to do and to have the support and commitment of so many dedicated members of our "team" is an asset that we aim to listen to more than perhaps has been done in the past. We're not perfect of course and would love to hear from you should you have ideas or issues that you feel could be done better. The feeling among the squad and team of staff is very positive and we need that same energy from our members and supporters in this new era and times of change. One thing I can assure you of is that the new team in the office is 100% committed and enthusiastic and they care, very much, about our club and the success we are striving for.

Keep that in mind should you have any issues and show them and the club the respect that I know they deserve. In doing so we'll work together as the team that can set the ground rules and put in place the foundation that will give our on-field team the energy, belief, and positive environment of support that they can springboard off to grab that premiership trophy with both hands.

From all of the Staff, Players and the Board of Directors, thank you to the Sharksforever administrators and the supporters who make this community what it is by contributing and caring everyday.

We're all depending on you!

Damian Irvine
Chairman

Damian personally telephoned me on my way to my father's funeral who suddenly passed away at such a young age just last month. It was a sentiment on behalf of the club that I'll never forget. He even invited me to take my ten year old baby brother (also an avid Sharks fan) down to watch the boys train some time. In all my years following the club, I'm not sure I've had more respect for anyone than him. Truly a class act and he's spot on with his thoughts about this forum. Fantastic community. Kudos to sharksforever management.
