Always feels like Sharks players fail to gain recognition from outside the club unless they’re blatantly obvious
It's the media. Even watching a clip this morning the panel couldn't bring themselves to mention the Sharks as a team challenging the top 2.

Still, Jesse getting in there was a shock. Must have been a cut and paste error.

Given we have Fitz as our coach and Nicho who are two of the most respected and loved people in the nrl, I really don't understand why the media/journos and so many former players who are in the media hates us so much.

Its just ridiculous how bad its getting now towards our club.

It's just narratives. We're not a hi-flyer like Brisbane, Melbourne, Roosters and Penrith. We'll need to win a lot, then they'll lock us on as favourites until we stop winning

Everything's about clicks. Nicho is a high-profile player, and tall poppy syndrome is rife in Australia. Therefore articles about Nicho being **** get more clicks as people like to see those at the top fail. With enough articles people begin to believe it's true, and then you get more clicks from people looking to confirm their bias.

There was an AMA on the NRL subreddit yesterday with two 'journos'. They straight out said that they write articles that people want to read. There's no wider agenda here. If it didn't get clicks, they wouldn't write it.

Tall poppy syndrome
Jealousy
It gets clicks and attention

There were still fans whose team finished like 11th going ‘Shadks pretenders confirmed!’ when we lost the prelim

The more rich handsome nice guy Nicho hynes gets shown on tv the more people want to feel better about themselves by dragging him down.
The more they want to drag him down the more the media want him on tv.

Panthers toned down the arrogance a little and just keep getting it done the media have pretty much left them alone. Everyone’s bored of it. They tried to run Cleary might go to England stories and nobody bought it so the next week they tried to run a ‘he didn’t deny it’ story and everyone thought well that’s just sad. No traction on their panthers bs because we’ve had it for years.

The only thing I would add (re agendas) is that some high profile clubs have good relationships with some jurnos, and often trade "scoops" for certain media coverage (or lack of).

Yeah I'd agree with that. There are clubs that have friends in high places that get less coverage, but I don't think we get more because anyone doesn't like us or there's an agenda against us.

Yep, the way it works is clicks, advertise the subscription offer, convert the punter to the paid product. That's all they are geared to do. And since it's digital, the attribution is immediate and directly to each article and writer.

It's a ****, short term way to look at results, but that's the digital trap. And they're writing to it... the content is predictably trash because of it. Then they moan about the death of journalism!

The adage that the NRL and the media hate us is a bit of a childish thought really. I must admit though the lack of coverage or praise given to us as a club over the years certainly annoyed me as well and I had also come to that conclusion.

But I don’t hold that belief any more. As others have said, it’s all about clicks and what stories will produce them. It’s all a bit sad these days that people think the way they do but the average punter just can’t get enough gossip it would seem.

Whenever I see a suspect article I no longer click on it, the comments are enough to tell you if the article is crap or not.

That’s something that’s escaped me, how the clicks lead to $$ for the writer. Is that what happens? People click, subscribe and the writer gets cash?

90%+ of the journos would forget Nicho and the Sharks in a second if nobody engaged.
Certainly no anti-Sharks agenda by NRL* and most if not all in media either

*sometimes pro other club agenda to our detriment though, like no women's team to start the comp

The writer is probably just contracted, maybe with bonuses. You click and get exposed to ads which pay to be on the site - revenue. Subscriptions where those are a thing another revenue stream. Mostly ads on the article though.

Also, if your previous articles have performed well you're more likely to have your next ones placed more prominently in the news feed.

As the others have said, and that it's likely a KPI now. I'd think also that you'd be more likely to get asked to do bigger, better articles, columns and the like of you can draw a crowd willing to pay up. There would be more money for the writer in that case
