When Dale Finucane made the painful decision to leave the Melbourne Storm late last week, his first port of call was coach Craig Bellamy. Then, having told Bellamy that he wold reluctantly depart at season’s end, the pair sat down to pore over his options.
The list was long, lucrative, and headed by the Sharks and a man who both Finucane and Bellamy knew and respected – Cronulla’s incoming coach Craig Fitzgibbon.
“When I called (Craig) to ask if we could have a conversation prior to making a decision, it was more so to let him know that I wouldn’t be continuing at the club,” Finucane told The Australian.
“We were able to have a conversation to talk about what my options were as well. It was good that I have that relationship and we were able to do that.”
Asked whether it was true that Bellamy helped convince him to join the Sharks, Finucane said: “I think purely because he has had a relationship with Craig Fitzgibbon before as well.
“I think it was purely based on a bit of familiarity and obviously the other clubs he may not have known people there.
“With what he knew, that was sort of what helped me make my decision as well. At the end of the day I had to weigh up a lot of things and prioritise them.
“It wasn’t just a monetary decision – it was where does my family want to live, the style of footy I want to play under the coaches, a lot of different factors went into our decision.
“But Craig’s input means a lot to me and it factored into my decision as well.”
Finucane agreed to join the Sharks on Saturday night and spent Sunday morning frantically contacting his teammates – who were on a day off – to inform them of his decision before it found its way into the public domain.
He will address them in person on Monday when the team is reunited. He clearly has work still to do at the Storm given they are flying high as premiership favourites, yet there is also a sense of excitement and expectation at joining the Fitzgibbon revolution at the Sharks.
The club was chastised in some quarters for dispensing with former coach John Morris to make way for Sydney Roosters assistant Fitzgibbon. Finucane is the latest evidence that chief executive Dino Mezzatesta and the board got it exactly right.
Fitzgibbon has become a magnet for players and he stepped up his attempts to woo Finucane when the pair were involved in NSW’s State of Origin campaign.
“I have a long relationship with Fitzy that dates back to 2014 being involved in the Country side,” Finucane said.
“It is not purely based on being involved in Origin with him. I had spoken to him there but the things that drew me towards (him) was that he is around a lot of the success at the Roosters – he is the defensive mastermind.
“He is in control of all their defensive structures. Much like Craig he is a defensively-oriented coach and I like that about him.
“His vision for the club moving forward – he is not established in terms of being a head coach but I like this vision for the club.
“I know he has a good work ethic because I have seen that in the seven or eight years I have had to do with him.”
While the Sharks were celebrating on Sunday, a handful of their rivals were devastated. St George Illawarra and the Wests Tigers were among the sides chasing Finucane for not just his ability on the park, but his impact off it.
The Tigers, in particular, have missed out again and left themselves open to criticism. Sources close to the club insist their offer was only for two years with an option for a third.
They weren’t willing to come to the table with a fourth year so they were up against it given the Sharks and Dragons were both willing to give Finucane the term he craved.
The Sharks had also signed teammate Nicho Hynes and St George Illawarra captain Cameron McInnes for next season. McInnes was expected to play lock and Finucane is happy to hand over the No. 13 jersey to accommodate the pair.
“Cam McInnes I had a bit to do with him in Origin last year and I could tell the type of person he is, how he carries himself and how professional he is,” Finucane said.
“In my short dealings I have had with him I can tell he is going to be a really good club person.
“I am happy in the front row, lock, whatever position.”
His immediate goal is to sign off at the Storm with a premiership.
“That’s the dream for everyone,” he said.
