Cronulla Sharks chairman Glenn Coleman has quit his role paving way for Damian Keogh to take role

CHAIRMAN Glenn Coleman has quit the embattled Cronulla Sharks to pave the way for former Olympian Damian Keogh to take the top job.

Coleman told The Daily Telegraph he was leaving to allow the newly elected board of directors to deliver their mandate.

“I’m handing over to a dynamic new group of directors,” he said. “They’ve got to get their head around the ASADA issue and then move forward from there.

“I have no doubt, that long term, the club is going to be okay.”

Coleman was left last man standing when the new directors, headed by three-time Olympian Keogh, swept into power at last month’s election.

He remained unchallenged as chairman but had differing views to the new board.

“I’m extremely busy running my business so the timing is right,” Coleman said. “I wish the club and the new board well in what I’m sure is going to be an exciting future.”

Coleman stepped in as an emergency chairman when former boss Damian Irvine stood down in March.

The new board will ratify Keogh as chairman next week and appoint a new director.

The club has been rocked in recent days by the leaking of the Tirsh Kavanagh report, that was commissioned by the previous board.

Emails have been published in recent days revealing their former doctor David Givney’s staunch opposition to sports scientist Stephen Dank.

Keogh would not comment when contacted by The Daily telegraph about the latest development.

Despite the ASADA crisis, the new board remains hopeful of securing a new major sponsor within weeks.

Shame, he seemed like a good operator with a bit of a hard edge about him.

Oh we'll, move on, hopefully the two vacant positions are filled by quality people.

I'd prefer it if they were filled by club members in a democratic manner, but as long as Unity go about the recruitment and appointment of two new directors in a best-practice, transparent way I will accept whoever ends up there.

COLEMAN GONE !
Glenn Coleman has resigned as Cronulla chairman after just two months in the position.

His replacement will be former Olympic basketballer Damian Keogh.

Coleman took over from predecessor Damian Irvine, who quit in the midst of ASADA's investigation into drugs in sport.

Coleman, who played 123 first-grade games for Cronulla and was immortalised in a Tooheys beer commercial during his playing days, stepped into the breach during the club's most trying times.

However, he is the only director not aligned with the Sharks Unity ticket which swept to power at the recent board elections. It is understood the former Sharks winger is happy to step back and let those elected lead the club, allowing him to again concentrate on his business interests.

Despite the drugs dramas engulfing the club, Coleman predicted in a recent interview with Fairfax Media that the Sharks would emerge as an NRL powerhouse with at least $35 million in the bank within five years.

Cronulla have endured an inconsistent season during the 2013 season. Touted as potential premiership contenders in the pre-season, they have struggled to string together a series of decent performances with the ASADA investigation proving a constant distraction to the players and officials.

Coach Shane Flanagan was stood down two days before the club's first match of the season but was reinstated two weeks later.

Cronulla are in ninth spot with a 4-5 record heading into this Sunday's clash with Canberra at Sharks Stadium.

So Keogh is now Chairman, despite being ineligible in the first place?

Can someone please translate this into a logical process?

it does seem to get worse and considering our current situation I'm worried what our next dilemma will be

I wonder whether the two vacant positions on the board go to the next two election candidates with the highest number of votes. That would be democratic would it not but I guess depends if they are unity members or not.

Ehh.. who cares. What difference is a lone voice on the board going to make?

I don't reckon much will change.
