Fitting finale for Hughes this Saturday
September 03, 2009

After 233 games, 20 for the Sharks in 2009, 31-year-old hooker Corey Hughes will run out for his final NRL game on Saturday night when the Sharks take on Souths looking for a win to avoid the dreaded wooden spoon.

It has been an illustrious career for the tough-as-teak hooker, one in which he was rewarded with a premiership in 2004 and a berth in the City Origin team just last season.

From the famous footballing Hughes family, the son of Bulldogs great Garry and younger brother to Glenn and Steve, the journey began for Corey Hughes back in 1998, playing against an unlikely opponent in the Adelaide Rams in a match where he scored a try on debut.

Since that time he has endeared himself to Bulldogs, now Sharks fans as a player of great spirit and toughness, with his ability to play in pain to be tested to the full in his final match on Saturday night.

Hit late by what was described by coach Ricky Stuart as a ‘cheap shot’ by Manly’s Anthony Watmough, Hughes suffered a rib injury but will bravely play on and take to the field against the Rabbitohs.

“We’ll see how it is,” Hughes said of his rib problem. “Them needles seem to work all right. We’ll jab a few of them in.

“My immediate family will be there, probably a bunch of friends, probably have a few beers after the game.”

While exactly how long he will last in the match against Souths is still unknown, Stuart is more than happy to provide Hughes with the opportunity of a fitting farewell.

“I don’t care if he plays one minute or 80 minutes,” Stuart said. “This is a bloke who deserves to finish on his own terms. He deserves to be shown the respect for the great career he has had.”

Sharks TV caught up with Corey this week to find out his feelings ahead of this weekends last match and his plans post football.

Personally I wasnt the slight bit happy when I found out corey was coming to the club. But after reading the article I think it would be disrespectful to his whole career if he doesnt get a crack at finishing it on a high note. He has also had a couple of decent games of late..Good luck and have a ripper of a game so you can tell your grand kids how you helped the sharks avoid their 3rd spoon in your last ever game when we win :)

Agree I would like to see him finish the year even if it is one min I would prefer to see him get a try or smash sandow into next 2012 :).

Good on Ricky and his respect for his players.

Poor Corey, they put a post on facebook and hard to keep warning people about offensive messages...

But he never complained when he got dropped, and from the way Stuart has treated him, he must have been one of the main drivers behind the team staying tough this year. I'd hope as a good team person they can keep him involved somehow.

Ricky has stated he doesnt care about the spoon, all the players put in the hard yards every game and nobody deserves to have their career ending after being injured before their last game.

That is totally selfish from Stuart, I pray every night that we don’t end up with the spoon and he says he doesn’t care? Well I’m a supporter and I bloody care. How dare he, if he doesn’t care if the Club gets the spoon he should resign as coach immediately! I really hope you got this statement from Stuart wrong Gibs????

I agree completely, his experience would be an invaluable asset to our new hooker Paul Aiton

Coach goes for camp
BY BRAD FORREST

CRONULLA Sharks coach Ricky Stuart has taken the unusual step of putting his battling team into camp to prepare for their final NRL game of the season on Saturday night.

They left for Kiama yesterday knowing that a win over South Sydney will ensure the Roosters, not the Sharks, take the wooden spoon. Stuart's senior men rallied to the cause.

Injured NSW Origin five-eighth Trent Barrett wants to return although he fractured his cheekbone and eye socket only five weeks ago, while hooker Corey Hughes will play his last game, his 234th, despite cracking a rib in the unlucky loss to Manly.

After doing everything but beating defending premiers, Manly Sea Eagles on Sunday, the Sharks want to go out with a bang for a home crowd through a powerful display.

Luke Douglas is anxious for a good showing after being sent off in the Manly game for a first-half tackle that the NRL later admitted did not warrant such action. The tough prop will edge closer to 100 consecutive matches since making his debut for the Sharks in March 2006. This will be No. 98.

Cronulla won't find winning easy over a Rabbitohs side which shocked everyone but themselves when they trounced St George Illawarra on Saturday night.

The Sharks backline is far removed from the one Ricky Stuart will field next season, but the game does provide a number of outgoing players the chance to be farewelled by their home crowd in their last match for the club.

They include local junior David Simmons, playing his first NRL game in more than four months, veteran Corey Hughes (retiring), Mitch Brown, another Cronulla junior, Blake Green, interchange forwards Ian Donnelly, Terence Seu Seu and Jak Afamasaga, along with injured Sharks like Brett Kearney and Ben Ross. Young prop Johnny Mannah, recently diagnosed with lymphoma, should also receive a warm reception.

The inclusion of David Simmons at centre sees young fullback Nathan Stapleton returning to the Under 20s Toyota Cup side, with Mitch Brown moving from centre to fullback.

If half Scott Porter fails a fitness test, Matt Wright will move to five-eighth and Blake Green to half.

Children 16 and under will get in free. Half-time entertainment will include 1000 dance performers.

I never really rated him as a player, except as one of the toughest blokes running around. But that interview shows a lot of class imo.

There's no hesitation in his answer.

I think in a way finishing his career with us was great way to go out in his own mind.

I agree his interview was all class.
