Dependant on how we come out of the recruitment wars for halves next year, it’s possible we may need this bloke to play there at least for a year or two?

I haven’t really watched him play in the halves, can anyone offer some comments on his potential as a fulltime 7/6, does he have a kicking game and/or game management skills??

We'd need a game managing half to play along side him. He's more the ad lib running 5/8th imo. He did play a few games with Reynolds at halfback funnily enough.

Converted him? Beale was always an outside back.

I meant we played Beale as an outside back utility from the bench to cover centres, wing, fullback

With the new rules though you wouldn't need a dedicated bench spot in the 17 for this - Tracey could be the injury/HIA reserve for instance

Maybe not as cover, but the plan these days seems to be to inject a fresh player like Tracey to try and carve up tiring teams in the last 20 minutes

I don't think this has worked for us in a while. Our last impact player from the bench that made a sizable difference to our attack/points was probably Seggy . We have tried it with Tracey and it's been average and now we are kinda trying it with Trindall. I doubt Moylan will be that great in this role, we have tried him before but might be worth another shot.

Tracey has performed much better as a starter given 80 mins, maybe there is a player out there that can fill this role you talk of but I don't think they are on our books at present

I think we need a genuine attacking option out of dummy half to support Brailey who is lagging a bit

Question.

What’s the biggest thing stopping Connor Tracey becoming a full time centre that can offer 5/8th cover and a bit of play making out wide? Like what Matt Burton is doing now and what Wighton used to do for Canberra in his younger years. What’s the biggest hole in his game? Is it his defence?

Definitely not a full time 7. He's a running 6. Best comparison imo is Ben Hampton. Can make reserve graders look silly with his running game in Cup, and can play a supporting role if needed, but just not good enough to be a full time NRL player in the halves. Passing, kicking, organising are all poor for a half.

Like a poor man's Jack Bird?

Yes. Defence. Despite him getting a lot of praise this year for his efforts in attack, he's been caught out in defence quite badly (Knights and Eels games come to mind). Gotta give him a break though - he's doing OK under the circumstances, and I think he's certainly capable of learning to defend in the centres properly.

I feel like he's a step ahead of most, having that hooker durability and a bit of ballplaying from fullback/halves. With work he could round out defensively and be very handy as an 80 minute player

Biggest deficiencies when compared to the ones you mentioned? Probably talent lol. Experience is going to be the biggest thing, he’s had next to no stability in the one spot since coming into grade. I’d love to see him develop into a faster Jamie Lyon

Once McInnes is in the team, I agree.

Tracey should cover 1-6, but should never play 9 again after this season. He is terrible there.

Yeah that's his biggest weakness as a 14, can't cover 9 (well).
But with McInnes in side that'd be perfect.
You wouldn't want to have to fight too hard to retain Tracey but def worth keeping.

One of the few sharks players I actually have a pic with so wouldn't hurt if he can become a grand final hero...

Tracey is probably in the background of everyone's pictures... he's just like that

Per James Hooper...

The Sharks are also closing in on finalising negotiations with utility player Connor Tracey – whose versatility and energy has been a standout for the club this season.

Yeah good news. Tracey gives me the Aubbo vibes with the Roosters. Just a footballer who can play anywhere and you always relied on him.

I think his size would be an issue long term in the centres and he is by no means a natural winger or natural any other position either

stack on the kilo's and you lose his energizer bunny type attributes . tracey is going well and I really like him but he is in a tough spot

he would be ideal HIA/foul play reserve but you can't forge a career out of that

He runs it hard for his size.

League is supposed to be a game that accommodates all sizes. If you're good enough and inventive enough you find a place. Although it's becoming less so these days.

yea we keep saying he has no position yet we chuck him in the centres or whatever and he is one of our best. maybe that's a reflection of the rest of the team not performing that well and that he shouldn't be looking the best but make of it what you will it's not connor's problem other players are phoning it in

even if he fixes his defense though there are going to be superior specialist options and we will have the cash to go after them.

if he can lift his capabilities in the halves I would find a place for him on the bench. not unlikely for Reynolds or SJ to cop an injury or HIA but bonus can also do a solid job in the backs if required . needs some good intense focused 1 on 1 coaching
