Blore is meant to be quite good but definitely an injury concern around him.
They could re-sign Garner as a fallback but no surprise they may look around at who is available.

Sorry Burgo, just slightly off topic in your post above, what is going to happen when Wade returns, assuming Wilton continues to play well?

The majority on here would probably say drop Nikora but Wilton and Wade play on the same side of the field so it is logical that Wilton is the one that gets dropped. Or can he play equally well on the right?
I quite like having Wilton on one side and Nikora on the other. Both hole hitting second rowers , Hynes has set them both up for a try if you include trials. Wade seems scared to go to the line and make those hard runs. Feel we would be better suited having two running second rowers instead of having only one and a ball player

I'll wait for Burgo's version, thanks Bort
Here you go ;)

This is all 32 starting back rowers from last weekend. Left side back rowers made more tackles across the board, and 6 of the top 7 individual tackling efforts were from left side guys.

Of the top 4, Nikora is the only one who is an established edge player. I'd guess that the other 3 were each heavily targeted by their opponent.

Well there you go
I don't know what to do with that information but I do find it interesting.

I wonder, if tendency to score on left holds up this season, if there is much of an element of targeting down that right channel (at their left side edge) to set up a short side play or left hand backline.

Madge is still the NZ coach isnt he? Maybe the meeting is about that. Or maybe not.

I'm not sure I'm even paying him 500k per year if I'm being honest. Yet to see a solid run of games aside from his first year where he was worth that.

Why do people cling to this myth? He was a mess defensively in his first year.

There is this idea that he was good early on and somehow went off the rails, but it’s just not true. His defence was garbage then and is garbage now.

Check out the Cordner try in this game. This is Nikora's 5th game in fg, around the time he was picked in the NZ test team and the hype was at its peak. His first season was filled with soft misses like this one, by both he and SJ.

We would be a better team with Graham and Wilton/Talakai… I reckon we should let Nikora go we will be better off, I hate inconsistent players they do my head in

They are just good mates having a beer and a yarn about the up coming season.

I thought Madge was moonlighting as a bartender

I would be interested to see how many carries each of those left side back rowers made. I would hazard a guess that Nikora is at the bottom

Any stats on how his first season defense compares to subsequent seasons?

We remember his first season for his line/hole running more than anything and were prob more forgiving or didn't notice his deficiencies as much.

I think a big issue we take with him now is not only is his effort/defense sus but we haven't seen that consistency with ball in hand either to make up for it.

Yes teams eventually worked out the whole SJ to Nikora thing but that can't be his excuse, he has shown on the odd occasion he can still turn up and play hard aggressive footy in attack and defense so attitude comes into question as much as ability.

He is looking like surplus atm. Teig is doing just as good as job likely with more upside, there's Talakai who's better imho and a few other maybes based on health and preferred positon that could jockey him out. I wouldn't spend that money on him ahead of those players

Yeah I think he started with an offensive bang but seemed to lose a bit of consistency

Suspect defence was overlooked for flashy new player who looked good with ball in hand to start with, not the only one to benefit from that.
The trick is to fix up the defence before everyone turns on you.

Nanai off contract @ Cows end of the year.
More than handy replacement for Nikora.

its more to do with his running game than his defensive game

he offers nothing in attack and refuses to do the hard yards but when he debuted he was making a **** tonne of runs per game
