Kimmorley's Origin hopes hit by injury

April 11, 2006 - 4:04PM

Brett Kimmorley remains confident of playing State of Origin football this year, despite an ankle injury which will rule him out of game one in Sydney next month.

The Cronulla captain will be sidelined for four to six weeks after suffering the injury while scoring a second half try during his NRL team's 28-24 loss to the Sydney Roosters on Saturday.

It has ended his goal of winning back the Blues jersey he lost after game one last year when he threw an intercept pass which handed a golden point victory to Queensland.

Kimmorley was axed and Newcastle skipper Andrew Johns, on the comeback trail from a knee reconstruction, was rushed back into the team as NSW recovered to win the series 2-1.

The Sharks No.7 is not giving up hope of a recall to the Blues, even though the ligament damage to his left ankle has delivered a major blow to his representative aspirations in 2006.

"I should only be missing for the first (Origin) match so if I can come back and play well enough, there's no reason why I couldn't play in the last two games," Kimmorley said.

"But I just want to do the work and recover from this and get back on the field for the Sharks, then I'll worry about the other stuff."

The Blues halfback position is wide open following Johns' recent announcement the Anzac Test between Australia and New Zealand on May 5 in Brisbane would mark his representative swansong.

Penrith captain Craig Gower is the clear favourite to wear the No.7 jersey at Telstra Stadium on May 24 as the Blues attempt to win an unprecedented fourth straight series.

St George Illawarra's Trent Barrett and Melbourne playmaker Matt Orford are also in the frame and have plenty of time to impress NSW selectors and new coach Graham Murray.

The bad news for Kimmorley was confirmed following MRI scans, x-rays and a consultation with a specialist.

Sharks coach Stuart Raper has shifted five-eighth Adam Dykes to halfback and handed former Souths utility Brett Kearney the No.6 jersey for the Easter Sunday clash with premier Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium.

Kimmorley believed Cronulla possessed the attacking options to embark on a winning streak without him, claiming the team no longer relied solely on him as the dominant playmaker.

"We've got a few different structures in place this year where I haven't been as dominant and haven't tried to get the ball every play," Kimmorley pointed out.

"I've been sitting back a little and picking my moments."

Back-rower Paul Gallen (lower back) has been named on the bench for the encounter against the Tigers, who will be missing their own chief playmaker in Benji Marshall (dislocated shoulder).

I am sorry to say I have to agree with san29. Every time the pressure is on Noddy crumbles. When we need to force a win we seem to struggle.

Hey never mind Kimmorley cracking. what about the slowest winger in the game Covell, he cracks eveytime he kicks, he only had to get 2 from 5 for us to win, and he missed 2 from in front. No excuses he is a Baaaaaaad kicker we lost so many games owing to his inability to be consistent with the boot

Yer right, how about That muppet Bird! he comes on, gives a penaltry with next play resulting in a try, then he's poor excuse for a tackle lets another try in. not to mention his ill discipline and pathetic attempts to throw fancy passes every time he trys to make up for his mistakes.this is constant in his game and is no wonder that Coach has barred him of recent months I say "ta ta" Biiiird fly the coop and make way for Kearny now there's a man with ticker and a good attitude. Brett can drive me mad as well, but I got to say he has proven him self a 1000 times compared to some of the jokers we have, all in all its nice to see Albert, lance, lartu, and gallen of the Shaky hands(god he drops as many as he scores) playing well

Um a short memory or a new come'r to the sharks, Matt Rogers was the best recent goal kicker we have had, and Mitch Healy was not at all to bad. Luke is good, But like Brett his mistakes are unforgivable. He should be getting those kicks, Its a well known fact in the NRL That anything under 76-78% with the boot is consider'd to be not good enough to get you over the line i.e we are losing games we should be winning due to a lack of conversions

I agree with covell, its not the first time he has missed from in front, the missed kick from in front cost us a win i think. The sharks scored 4 tries in 8 mins and were coming home strong as, nothing like covell missing a conversion from in front to dampen your spirits. Before the bulldogs scored there last minute try (which wouldnt of happened had covell kicked a goal from in front) we had scored 5 tries to there 4. If you want to put **** on someone for the loss, covell is miles in front of kimmorley in that respect.

nod is the reason players get smashed...notice the difference when nod was out n dykes was in control...nod plays flat n that doesnt work anymore...we need to play like dykes does...with depth n actually give players thinking time b4 the line

Yea its noddys fault whenever the opposition score a try, its noddys fault when a player gets smashed, its noddys fault when one of his team mates drop the ball, its even noddys fault when covell misses conversions from in front but whenever we win, its not because of noddy.

I never said he was a legend you fool, i dnt understand why he and he only gets the blame whenever we lose, he even has **** put on him when we win. Really i couldnt care less if kimmorley was there or not, i just want the sharks to win, thats all i care about. If it takes dykes to get to the grandfinal, brilliant, as long as we get there so i can see my beloved sharks finally take out the title.
