A+++ for the concept, ****s all over the All Stars.

The best part was knowing that we have some promising juniors, no more Mills or Chad but some proper good talent coming through.

This should by all respects be the last nails in Gards and Stapo's first grade careers, Wright needs another go, but his game depends on who he has around him a lot, he was good at the Bulldogs that's why we brought him over. Prior was a massive dissapointment, but that's been out weighed by the pleasant surprise in Ayshfords form, he had some amazing touches, funny cos I've always rated him but (not for the first time) I let some posters on here opinions warp my view, he's the first proper centre we've had in a while. Hope he has just as big a year.

All in all despite pulling two all nighters here in the UK watching and falling asleep for the last game (sounds like I didn't miss much) I really just enjoyed seeing some footy again, jumping round like a dick when we scored..

Can't wait till the season proper.

Agree that its good to be able to see our younger players on show in the nines. I guess all the other clubs get the same view , as we do of their young talent ( two way mirror). It will give the clubs more options if they do jump ship and give them a greater viewing to develop their wish lists.

Getting a bit jumpy myself. 18 days is it?

Great effort from the boys to make the last 4 and the only Sydney team, really proud.

I can't understand why Gal played in this tournament when he had no intention of playing today, he should've given the spot to another rookie to blood. He clearly said on Sharks TV that'll be catching a flight Sunday so he can have a last sparring session Sunday night.

Match payments mate

Just like why he is boxing

If that is the case it's extremely selfish.

If you want to box, don't play nines and leave our squad short on the second and most important day.

The club is in a vulnerable position because of ASADA and Gallen is taking full advantage. We have lost the power to say no to these escapades.

We probably still would have lost, but this could have potentially cost the club money by not progressing further. Thanks club captain.

So I didn't watch the tournament and to be honest don't care about games unless their worth two points. The exceptions are trial games (don't care about result, just what players show) and finals games. In saying that, could this concept provide the answer to the age long debate about what to do over the state of origin period?

I know people in the media like Gould have suggested something similar, but how does the below sound?

Suspend the competition for a three week period. Play origin over three consecutive Wednesday nights. Play a Nines tournament over three consecutive Sundays, as an example first week in NZ, second week in country NSW and thirs week in country QLD.

So it could look something like this:

Wednesday 25 June - SOO 1
Sunday 29 June - First week of Nines in NZ.
Wednesday 2 July - SOO 2
Sunday 6 July - Second week of Nines in country NSW
Wednesday 9 July - SOO 3
Sunday 13 JUly - Third and final week of Nines in country QLD which would be quarter finals, semis and final. Maybe string it out a bit to make it a few more games.

Obviously the Nines would be missing SOO stars but that's better than having them miss competition games imo. It also gets the SOO circus over and done with in three weeks rather than having it detract from the competition for two months. I know quite a few people who lose interest in the competition over the SOO period, it's not healthy for the game.

Have big prize money for the Nines to encourage teams to play full squads. Only two Nines games per weekend shouldn't be too taxing on players.

I'd be interested in hearing other's thoughts, especially those from the country.

I thought each club had to have a minimum number of 'marquee' players entered in the tournament?? Perhaps this was always the plan with Gal leaving early??

BTW i don't agree with him having a boxing match this close to the start of the season, especially considering the amount of club games he has missed through injury in the past.

Just have one Origin game per year.

The other two Origin are only for revenue

Almost every single action taken on this world is 'only for revenue'.

Nrl is run to make money, nothing wrong with providing good entertainment AND making money.

Pretty sure they didn't need to. In any case surely we sent enough "marquee" players compared to other clubs anyway, considering Fifita and Todd both went.

im not complaining because we play better without him, the days of sharks having no go forward without gal are way behind us. I even think he is a waste at lock ,he fifita and taga should be front rowers and he should just worry about metres

agree, plus ayshford was our marquee signing, and Taga went. us newcastle and the warriors sent the best squads so i dont think there was a marquee problem

he played really well actually , found some space scored a couple trys and did all the work for another , drew in the full back and passed to I forget who and scored, his best games were against titans and parra

Yeh he went well, seems to have extra confidence from last yr, a few times he brushed away defenders easily, not sure if he has improved under the high ball (imo thats his biggest weakness).

yeah his high ball skills are a worry but he seems like the kind of kid who will master it soon enough, dont forget he is a make shift winger. He and leutele owned the left side day two , didn see wright there he started most games at right wing

Your merchandise sold out over here.

Your team got massive Roars and standing ovations from the Kiwis as they walked around the ground.

The Sharks have made tens of thousands over and above the prize money.

They could make a half million dent in their debt come this time next year by repeating this years top four finish and bringing more jerseys and flags to sell to Kiwis.

THE undeniable success of the Auckland Nines has changed the rugby league landscape forever. Too big a call?
Multi-millionaire Eric Watson doesn’t think so. And given the New Zealand Warriors owner once decked Hollywood Gladiator Russell Crowe, it would take a brave man to argue.
Last Friday Watson invited all 16 NRL chief executives and NRL chief executive Dave Smith for a barbecue at his house, which has its own golf course.
His soiree was a first. An important first for the game.

[h=3]Auckland Nines top tries - Day 2 3:28[/h]

DVU_1600214_RLG_NINES_TOP_TRIES_DAY_2_SOT.jpg

The top tries from Day 2 of the Auckland Nines.

“Thirteen years I’ve been involved with the Warriors,’’ Watson said. “And I would never have envisaged 16 NRL CEOs sitting in my lounge room and the CEO of the NRL as well.
“Then to have them all come and play at Eden Park ... we all have big dreams, but to imagine it even occurring was beyond any dreams.
“The exciting thing is that the NRL has matured so much. When I was first involved in the game, the CEOs didn’t like each other, the coaches didn’t like each other.
“That extended to how it was operated as an organisation but it got to the point where these guys realised we’re all on the same team.
“The CEOs are all on the same team. They have a brand, they have a business and they have a sport that competes with others. And now they’re getting their act together and the result is this.’’

By “this” he means consecutive capacity crowds of 46,000 in a country obsessed with rugby union — and New Zealand’s Prime Minister John Key walking freely among the masses, smiling for photos with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers.
The atmosphere at the event was unlike the raw emotion that grips us during State of Origin. Different too to NRL grand final day, when only two teams matter.
It was a carnival of high-powered rugby league skill and athleticism, a celebration and an advertisement that will leave a footprint in New Zealand long after the yellow five-point try paint has been removed from Eden Park.
Bulldogs, Sharks, Warriors and Tigers merchandise all sold out before midday yesterday.
“It’s like something we’ve never seen before,’’ an NRL official said.
Even Smith, who refuses to sway from the script of “expansion’’ and ‘‘growth’’, couldn’t help having a subtle dig at the rival code as he stared out over a raucous crowd.
“This is much better than sevens,’’ Smith said.

So impressed with the entertaining, expansive and high-risk style of rugby league that the Nines promotes, one chairman of a Sydney NRL club is already planning to introduce a Nines carnival within his junior league.
“It will be an annual event here, but there could be subsections of mini NRL Nines in other places that feed into this,’’ Watson said. “The value of that commercially for sponsors, for owners, is massive.’’
However, the true measure of where the Nines ranks among the players will come next year.
Will the stars who sat out this year try to twist the arms of their coaches who want to keep them in cotton wool? As Brisbane’s Alex Glenn said: “Everyone in the NRL wants to be a part of this.”

Pretty funny seeing people rate players chances in the team based on the nines. Sure - there are a few promising youngsters - but their performances against Manly last week will have a lot more to do with their chances than their performance on the weekend.
