I was sitting in my lecture today and we were discussing why people get a connection to a team and why do they support them. Nearly everyone in the room said they support the Brisbane Broncos because that is where they are from. Which got me thinking... Are people who live out of town more passionate supporters of their team.

I say this because I live in Brisbane and I know alot of guys who love league and support the broncos, but only a few who are as passionate as me about their team. If they lose or winning they don't seem to get effected by it. They just carry one with the broncos. However if the Sharks lose I can feel Angry, Depressed, upset, frustrated or all of them at once in a big mixed up emotion. I have never been to the shire, I support this team cause I liked to watch them when the likes of Mat rogers, Et, Dykes and Peachey running around, never was I told " You have to go for this team because you live here" So what all this mumble jumble means is.. Is a passion you grow for a team bigger than one you are forced in to? Or Am I just to passionate?

It's not about being out of town, it's just that Broncos fans have had it too good for too long and they have never really had a tough moment to test their loyalty etc.

When you're a Sharks fan, you're really a fan, because any of the more casual fans would have jumped ship long ago!

I understand your logic and line of thinking but I don't think it's something you can generalise as it will vary from person to person. While some people living in, say, Brisbane as you have said, may be some of the most passionate Sharks fans as they don't take them for granted as they may only see them play once or twice a year you may have just as many who simply started liking them because their favourite colour is light blue.

Two extremes I know but I am just showing the range and how much it will vary.

I got a worse one for ya, I was 7 as well and spent heaps of money collecting NBA cards with my friends and then they switched and started buying St George stuff and ruined my hobby! I then picked the team that was enemies with them! Am very passionate now though! Spose it does show that the only thing that pre-dated my love of the sharks was my hate of St George!!

That has to be the greatest story of all time how a person came to love a team.

even most ove my afl mad loving mates have been dragged to a sharks v storm game down here and had to listen to me in the past and now me and my 2 little girls (6 & 3) scream out to the sharks,

When you look at pea-heart 'fans' from the Shire like Panda and Iron, its clear us out of towners have it all over them, dier.

I should maybe clear this up, It wasn't a dig at Broncos fans or Sharks fans, It was just my examples.

Although it varies from fan-to-fan, I certainly believe that a decent portion of the Shire take for granted what rests at their doorsteps.

i was born in sutho hospital but never lived there. i grew up on the mid north coast, but had relo's in the shire. I feel its part of my heritage so i've always been a shark.

i dunno about being more passionate as an out of town supporter, but its definitely hard to justify the fact that you barrack for the worst team in the history of the game if you don't live there....

i live in sydney again (moved here recently) so i'll be down to the shire for many home games this year
