I dunno about paying 25% above market but I agree we need to do pretty much whatever it takes.

I think I'm coming around to the sign a youngster + a halves coach plan.

There's plenty of ructions at Manly so perhaps we could snare Andrew Johns as a fulltime attack and skills coach. Have him to shape a new halves pairing and attacking style out of Barba, Bird, Tracey, Nu Brown and a signing (Sezer?). That's pretty much what Manly did over two years when Orford left.

What kind of youngster? We have some goid ones they just need the right specific development, and a high end halves coach is that.

We should take Albert Kelly back, said that last year, hope it happens- reckon he will have learnt his lesson grown up and be lethal back in the NRL in a second stint..

I'd prefer not to but if it was the only way of signing a class half then I'd be comfortable with it. With the likes of Val and Bird looking the goods and Gagan to come back I'm not sure we're as unattractive as some people* think (including me, I keep changing my mind on this).

I like the thinking but what if we just blooded Connor early next year and didn't go for a bought player.

Tracey has the kicking game barba can slot into 6 Bird 13 holmes at the back and wells can jump into a centre spot.

Build the team around Connor, Bird and Holmes.

When you say blood him, do you mean in first grade? Has he played against men yet (serious question)?

Nope he hasn't yet - do the same as they did with bird - send him to the 9's few games in ressies then bring him up.

Its a risk but one that I reckon would pay off.

Maybe but I don't think we can rely on it. Would rather buy a quality half for the next few years, give him next year in the reggies and then play him in 2017 at 6 or 7 (I don't see the difference these days).

We will lose him imo if we sign another half. Consider this we have been running around with Robson who while is a gun defender is rubbish in attack.

How much do we lose/risk putting in a young attacking player? Especially with the fact we could hold onto Murphy, we have Nu and Dallas is coming along.

I don't know. Admitedly I've never seen him play but it sounds as though he's still a couple of seasons away from firsts? Robson won't be around for much longer . Sounds as though Nu will be a hooker. Murphy, speculative at best. The more I think about it the more certain I am that we need to buy a better than average half for next year.

Holmes and Bird are only going to get better, both combined to win us the game against the roosters. We won't win the comp with Connor at 7 next year but it will set us up to have a new era of success. The trio would be all 20-21 next year so when they hit their prime at 24-25 would have hopefully racked up close to 100 games.

That will be comp winning experience. Add in some of the other juniors, like Wells, Gagan, Carr, D

Can't see us being able to blood Connor for more then a handful of games if we sign a better then average half for 2 or 3 years seeing as we already have Barba on the books for another 2 years.

Thats the way I reckon Connor will see it as well and he will look to go elsewhere to get a shot.

Well if the powers that be were confident that he could handle it and do the job then yeah, sure. Of course.

But if its not clear that he can then you would be gambling your season and his future on a 19/20 year old taking the reins on an NRL side. Something that lots have tried doing and few have succeeded doing.

In my earlier post I meant someone like Cornish, Williams, Sezer or Elgey - someone with some senior experience but not Hodko or Maloney. If that guy comes good, as does Tracey - sweet, there's your pairing. Tracey could easily play 6. If Barba comes good then he's it. If 3 or more come good - pick the best, release the others and you're still sweet.

(e.g. what happened at Manly in my earlier example - Hodko, Foran and DCE (+Lyon) were all around at the time. They went with Hodko in 2010 but then didn't match Canterbury's $275k offer for him because they had DCE developing up on the Sunshine Coast.)

Why limit yourself to one great hope? Spread the risk.

Tracy is still 18. Also spending this season on the sideline injured.
No way he will be able to prove he is NRL ready by next year. So it's a no brainer looking for a half for next year As you can't put all your eggs in the basket of a kid who's never played above under 20's.

If by chance he is beating down the door early next year and we have a new half, we have the option of playing barba off the bench and then 2017 being barbas last season he could be shopped around.
Or Tracy, Barba and a new half all play well and we finaly have the blessing of quality half depth!

Read in RLW today that Todd wants to come back to the Sharks this year, will be interesting to see how this one unfolds. I'd be keen to have him in the 7 jersey with Robbo playing for the jets.
