Everyone wants him…..apparently

TIGERS SET TO MAKE PLAY FOR KNIGHTS UTILITY

The Tigers are reportedly interested in signing Knights utility Connor Watson as a replacement for the Dragons bound Moses Mbye.

The Australian’s Brent Read reported on Triple M that while the Knights are still the frontrunners for Watson’s signature, the Tigers are set to make a play for his services.

“The Knights had a meeting with Connor Watson scheduled for last week and that meeting went ahead with Newcastle about his future,” Read said on Triple M.

“He is off-contract at the end of this year and the Knights are confident they will keep him, but they are bracing for other clubs to come in for him.

“The club they think is going to make a move for Connor Watson is the Wests Tigers and the reason for that is Moses Mbye is currently at the Wests Tigers filling that utility role.

“He is headed to the Dragons next year and the Knights thought whichever club didn’t have Moses Mbye next year would make a play for Connor Watson out of the Tigers and the Dragons.

“It is going to the be Tigers. The Knights are still confident they will keep Watson, but they are concerned.

“They are looking over their shoulders and they expect the Tigers to make a move sooner rather than later for Connor Watson.

“He is an important player for the Knights and a very popular member of the squad. He is close to Kalyn Ponga because they live together.”

The 25-year-old has scored 23 tries in 98 games for the Roosters and Knights since his debut back in 2016.

With the amount of injuries and the speed of the game having good depth and players that can fill positions is just going to be more vital going forward.

That's why I don't mind getting Watson. Let's be honest we haven't had a full strength team at all this year so wondering where Watson fits in a fit 17 is probably less important but having someone of his ability to call up either from the Jets though doubtful as I doubt he's being signed to play Jets, or off the bench will be pretty handy. Better than using an outside back who can only fill a few positions.

Give that spot to Watson and if we don't need him to cover someone play him in the middle. McInnes can give Brailey a spell at hooker and Watson comes in at lock.

This news has been going around for the last few months mate, perhaps your mate has been reading this forum! :)

I wasn't all that impressed with him in last night's game and I don't think he's a real priority for us.

But Fitz has worked with him before at the Roosters and knows him well so happy for him to make a call on that.

I’d much prefer to not sign Watson, what’s he going to cost? 400k?
Let’s pool that 400k & put it towards another spot we had put aside for a 300-400k player & get a genuine rep class player along with a promising min wage player

Not sure we'd still have a spare 600-700k above fleshing the last 7 spots in the squad out with 100-180k players. 400k I could believe I guess.

Retaining Moylan probably killed off the Watson option

Ok, i we’re under the impression we had more money, only rumours in the rumour thread but weren’t we supposedly getting two quality forwards?
We signed Finuncane so I was expecting one more, we’ve already wasted money on Moylan & I hope we don’t do another meh signing for another 400k or so.

Wouldn't be planning on more big $$$ signings until we get Fif's and Wade off our books and get like value players.

I know what you mean but we shouldn’t be worried about making good signings if there available, we just have to be shrewd & choosy about who.
We’ve had some dud ones we all know about plus its proven cause not only can they not get half of what they were on with us but are struggling for a start anywherewe, it was a very very poor retention for Moylan.

I think we probably won't see 2 more high quality/price players (ie Watson + another 300-400k forward) though. Maybe one more solid signing to come, if we are lucky.
Still don't even know this years roster!

To think, NRL recruitment just might be swinging to favour "good Guys"who can play solid, not ****wits who can play Good, but not too often.

No names but Hannay said they have a hit list of players they’ll be attempting to make a loan arrangement over next week or so

Walters or O'Sullivan?

With like 4-5 games left, and Trindall, Tracey, Moylan and Metcalf available I was against bringing any of them over for a loan.

But now with Tracey average in the halves and Moylan an injured spud, I would maybe take O’Sullivan to partner Trindall so Tracey can play centre and Metcalf can be the 14.
