Morally we can & should stick to our guns but when you consider what the salary Dugan is on & what Chad is supposedly getting it's crazy to think Maloney is on less than them.

I know who's more instrumental in getting us wins in 2018 out of those three.

Yeah but what about 2017? Maloney has been **** for us on and off the field in most areas.

If he was carving it up and staying humble he'd probably already have an upgrade for next year and a two year extension.

It is all on him.

I'm not defending Maloney, just saying how crazy the wages are when you do the comparison, some guys have been kicked up the backside by a rainbow with the contract $ they are getting.

It's in their hands in the first place though, no one is forcing them to sign for 3,4,5 etc years.

Look at Taumolololololo, there will be players not up to his level earning more than him per year in 6-8 years but that's the choice he made.

But its not even a comparison. Those contracts were signed for a new scale of player worth. Maloney didnt have the foresight to do a deal that enabled him to cash up in 2018.

Exactly. Looks great to say you signed a $10M deal but in 5 years time the Ben Pomeroys will be earning near that

The problem with all the arguments that Maloney should just suck it up are that yes he is contracted for next year, and yes he agreed to the price at the time, but if he now feels like he's being cheated then the club is the loser at the end of the day. Because unhappy players don't play well. And he is only contracted next year to play, not to play well. So we can "stick to our guns' all we like, but it won't result in wins or a title. That's the problem with contracts, players are people, and if for whatever reason they become unhappy, well the club has suck it up and change that, or the club will lose what its paying all that money for anyway, regardless of what the player once agreed to.

Penrith appears to be going through this now with Moylan.

And I've said for a while that Maloney's form would be much better had we found a way to upgrade him, which we're obviously unable to do, which is probably why Flanno is happy for a swap, because he knows the value of an unhappy player. Zip.

Maloney is an A grade ****wit. I'm calling it. Only another premiership with a significant input from him will make me feel differently.

I agree 100% , a lot of people currently really not recalling what Maloney was a major contributor to last year when he was happy.

Alot of people are unhappy with their job and/or terms but they go into work and do it anyway out of a sense of responsibility or simply because they gotta pay the bills. Employers don't simply just cave and give them more money to make them feel content and 'fairly' treated.

That unhappy employee eventually leaves that work place or get's let go if their performance over a period of time drops below the levels expected and they replace them with someone better suited.

What's the lesson in all this? Don't cave to the pressure and if he doesn't perform don't extend him or just plane **** him off if he is tanking games. Yes it's a bit trickier with contracts but another club is gunna have to pay him more than we are right now anyway and we wouldn't be out of pocket with a formal release granted if he doesn't feel like reserve grade...

He is not as irreplaceable as he thinks he is

A consensual agreement between both the club and player about giving him an upgrade with the understanding it is formed as part of an overall contract extension beyond next year is fine. Being bent over a barrel and pressured into splashing cash or he'll be a surly unproductive **** is not

If he plans on tanking next season he might find that not many clubs are willing to pay big bucks for a ****house 32 year old.

And it also seems that the salary cap won't be where they hoped it will be anyway, so the Ben Hunts of the world will probably be overpaid, not the norm.

Are you robbie farahs manager by any chance?

James maloney will be 1 of 30 first grade players next year at the sharks. With his current contract valuenin consideration, the club negotiated new deals for many players, which for the most part fills our cap for next year. The club should not leave a few hundred grand in a sad **** fund for players who have mismanaged their contracts. Clubs cant sign a guy for a mil then say sorry ur playing ****, next year u get 200. So if a player signs for 650 but the next year thinks hes more valuable, he may ask but he cannot expect a top up, nor should he hold that against the club.

The club has too many players to keep on the field to be worrying about james maloneys retirement fund
