THE FIVE HOTTEST OFF-CONTRACT HALVES (BAR DCE AND FORAN)
Written by Steven Russo, March 1, 2015
MANLY pair Kieran Foran and Daly Cherry-Evans aren’t the only gun halves off-contract this season.
There are plenty of talented sixes and sevens available this year outside of Geoff Toovey’s dynamic duo. Here are five of the best:
1. TRENT HODKINSON
Considered an injury prone wreck two seasons ago, Hodkinson’s stellar 2014 has seen him become one of the game’s elite number sevens. Hodkinson has creativity, but his real asset is his calmness under pressure. The Cabramatta junior has sealed many a game with a last minute field goal or a sideline conversion, plus he’s a NSW representative. What more could you want?
2. JAMES MALONEY
Contrary to what many people were saying, James Maloney actually had a good season last year. Well, as least statistically. During the 2014 season the Central Coast product came up with 17 line break assists (second in the NRL) and 24 try assists (third in the NRL). Throw in his accurate goal kicking and big game experience and you have one of the hottest halves on the market.
3. CHRIS SANDOW
Two years ago people would have laughed at us for suggesting that Sandow would a great signing. However, during the 2014 season, not only did the pocket sized number seven manage to claw his way back into the Parramatta side, he also managed to achieve some consistency, eventually taking out Parramatta’s player of the year award. An exciting ‘off the cuff’ type player, Sandow’s ability to create something out of nothing makes him potentially one of the most dangerous attackers in the game.
4. MITCH CORNISH
One of the most talented halves to come out of the Canberra junior league, Cornish has been forced to cool his heals in the lower grades for the past couple of seasons but looks set for a breakout season in 2015. Still only 21, the Goulburn product only has eight first grade games to his name and still needs more time to establish himself. However, the potential is definitely there and age is on his side.
5. CHAD TOWNSEND
Townsend showed enough last year in his first full season of first grade to suggest he is an NRL standard half. Can be inconsistent, as evidenced by his short stint in NSW Cup last year, however, his long kicking game is well developed. Has all the fundamentals.
