Also we have some players trying to play three positions at once and not achieving one position and nothing will change until that alone does.

Seriously i could of coached the Storm to win the gf back in 07/09. That team was just ****ing ridiculous. The nrl should of known just by looking at the roster that something wasn't right.

They were owned by the same people, so it looked pretty right to them.:glasses-cool:

You wonder why he was on the books for SO much. Gallen on how much ?

Manly is unlikely grant Anthony Watmough a release from the final year of his contract

THERE are almost a million reasons why Manly won’t grant Anthony Watmough a release from the final year of his contract - and why they’ve started negotiations to keep him at Brookvale until the end of 2017.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Watmough is on Manly’s books for a whopping $970,000 next season, making him impossible to shift without suffering a huge salary cap hangover.

Ironically, Watmough’s contract has been structured identically to the team mate at the heart of his angst: Glenn Stewart.

MANLY FACING PLAYER EXODUS

In order to keep the nucleus of their ace team at Brookvale, Watmough and Stewart have spent the past three seasons deferring representative bonuses and salary cap increase windfalls.

The sacrifices resulted in the current contracts of both players being ridiculously weighted on the final year, which warehoused all the bonus payments. It’s understood these deferred payments make up $300,000 of the final year of Watmough’s contract, an amount Manly would have to bear on their 2015 salary cap should they release the 31-year-old.

Stewart’s big pay day came this season, when his salary was worth $850,000 in lieu of his pay deferrals. Although he did not request nearly that much to stay put, Stewart was officially told there would be no contract extension in April - a call that sewed the seeds of disquiet among Manly’s senior players.

Watmough and Stewart’s brother, Brett, have been the most vocal antagonists. They are yet to formally request a release, but have made their possible intention to do so loud and clear. Yet the fact neither Watmough nor Brett Stewart have knocked-on coach Geoff Toovey’s door might also be because they are yet to secure another home.

Clandestine approaches have been made to South Sydney via intermediaries not related to their common manager, George Mimis, after the Rabbitohs signed Glenn Stewart on a two-year deal.

Rabbitohs officials have made it clear they cannot accommodate the two other Manly players, and rumours of Brett Stewart’s arrival have already upset star fullback Greg Inglis.

Parramatta has shaped as another option for Watmough, who enjoys a healthy relationship with Eels coach Brad Arthur. The pair spoke during Origin camp, but Parramatta’s 2015 salary cap is tightly constrained by pay-outs to players no longer at the club.

Even if the Eels did manage to make Watmough an offer, they would struggle to cover half of what he’s owed at Manly next season. Sea Eagles officials have also pointed out that because Watmough has already earned a significant proportion of next year’s salary, they would be obliged to pay him the $300,000 in owed bonuses even if a release is requested.

Those payments would still be counted toward next year’s salary cap, but without a NSW Origin representative to offset them. Having crafted their roster to cater for Watmough’s back-ended contract, there is no chance Toovey is going to undo years of careful planning.

Which explains why the club has already initiated talks with Watmough to extend his deal beyond next year, with early negotiations suggesting a further $1.2 million for 2016 and 2017

Long and short of it probably only Matai (and not very likely) would get a release.

Doesn't matter if we can. DCE would view a move to the Sharks as a big backwards step in his young career and poised with too much risk which would potentially hurt him in the long run

It would take a whole new level of 'paying overs' to have him even consider us as an option
What do people on here think the club should be prepared to go to, to bid on DCE. I don't really think we could get him here but you have to be in it to win it. Should/can we match the Parra offer?

I'd prefer to get a half the next level down like Hunt or Sezer, better value for money imo. DCE is a great player but $1m per year on one player is a big whack out of the cap.

We should publicly offer some huge amount to DCE -like $1.3 or $1.5 mil per year and drive his price so high that whoever gets him is paying massive overs above his actual worth and using up their valuable cap space - just like the dogs did to us with Fifita..

Play the game sharks.. even though you cant get DCE we should try to make him so expensive who ever does secure his signature will have little room for any other signings!

haha i could see that backfiring, DCE makes public announcement that he would rather return to his 75k salary than play for sharks at 1.3 mil.

Would be over the moon with those two. I had a feeling Bennett going up there might have the reverse effect to what's happened in the past. Griffen seems extremely popular with the players and he's been royally shafted. We need to strike while the iron's hot!

i think we will see some early releases out of the broncos, i think Bennett will have a fair idea of the team he wants to field starting 2016, and they will begin to make movements starting this year, to build through 2015 to 2016 when they pinch DCE etc. COuld be some quality dregs worth getting

I can't tell you how much I want Brisbane under Bennett to fail miserably.

Bennett seems to work with the team that he inherits. He does usually bring a few with him, but he mainly seems to try to work with what he has got.

I reckon he'll keep Hunt and won't worry about DCE.

just a feeling.
