Love this kid - and his story. Nobody “discovered” him. Just turned up for a trial at 17, made the team, and 3 years later has an NRL contract. Good stuff.JC signed for 2 years

Not suggesting he is not talented but there are some kids who might be extremely talented who don’t make it based on attitude.

As dev player he can now play NRL this year so definitely a chance.
It’d probably take another middle injury though so I guess let’s hope we can wait until next year

He’s not a dev player. He is on a train and trial deal. He said so in the interview.
T&T can travel to away games, and can play if there are Covid-related withdrawals in the lead up. To play a home game he’d have to be added to the dev list, since even with said injury the league would force the Sharks to pick Martin and Pele ahead of him.
Same deal for Tommy. He would have to be on dev list or top 30 currently.

What is the reasoning behind these stipulations on how and when you can use certain members of your team? Or is it just more arbitrary rules for the sake of having rules?

It’s the salary cap + cba rules.
You can only spend a fixed amount of money on players who appear in NRL games - that being the $10m-ish cap, plus a pool for dev/emergency players (which used to be called the 2nd tier cap).
If you bring in someone who is not in your top 30 or your dev list, you are effectively spending money outside the cap, so you need an exemption from the league.
This year the league said that teams can add a number of these players to their 24-man squad, but they can still only play with permission from the league - on confirmation of at least two other players in the 24 testing positive to Covid.
