Haven't seen stats but I don't think Trindall is a defensive liability. Usually it's his outside men, who either cram in.
Sounds like he's a defensive liability if his outside men need to cram in a lot to help him

Just checked his tackle stats on NRL.com and he's ranked 44th for missed tackles, but average missed tackles he's not even in the top 50.

Also, if you see, there are more high profile players that have more missed tackles and missed tackle averages than Trindall.

Moylan, Brailey, Rudolf and Nikora rank higher in missed tackles. In average missed tackles per game, Moylan, Rudolf and Brailey rank higher.

Check it out, pretty good.

Some of the best players in the game are in that top 50.

Luai, Munster, Kikau, Crichton, B.Smith, Hughes, Wighton, Olam and Manu to name a few. Also all of who, except Olam, rank higher than Trindall.

NOW I am not saying Trindall is on their level, but not going to roast a rookie who has less than 15 games starting and call him an liability.

I appreciate the argument you're making mate. Would you say he needs to work pretty hard on his defence? There also a lot of very good (even okay) halves not on that list, and I think he should be aiming a little higher if he's our long term halfback, is all.

Tackling is only part of defending. There are a lot of things that don’t show up on a stats sheet, and Trindall is doing those things very poorly. He can tackle. His defensive positioning and decision making is abhorrent.

Since you wanted to use stats though…

A player being top 50 in the NRL out of 400-500 players as a middle like Brailey is not ideal, but understandable given his workload and minutes. Being top 50 as (primarily) an edge player is worse. Being that guy and also only playing half the minutes of almost everyone else on the list - is shithouse.

“Per game” stats are also not particularly useful for rating Trindall. He played 21 minutes or less in 7 of his 18 games, and in another he played only 45. “Per game”’ for those other ten games would be more useful… and here we have it - 45 missed tackles in 10 games. Where would that put him on misses/game? 7th overall, and 1st among players who played 10 games or more (Chambers was worse, but played just 9 games).

You can’t even make an argument that a lot of his misses came while playing in the middle (you could give him a pass for that) because they weren’t. He missed just 8 tackles in those 8 games combined. He obviously CAN tackle. It’s the other stuff that makes him a liability.

Whether you watch him closely, or just read the stats, the verdict either way is that once he started playing 80 minutes per week he was one of the worst defensive players in the NRL.

We are bringing in new head coach with a defense first mindset - so you would think a lot of these positioning and decision making issues will be addressed very early on.

It will really be the first coach of this type we have had since Flanno left .

Also do not underestimate the role of Steve Price - he coaches very good structure - as we saw in 2016…

Just from a depth perspective as needing another prop, centre and half have all been raised recently...
(the below is just a guesstimate what Fitz may be thinking, plenty of players could move up or down their list by a spot, especially with a good preseason but even subjectively - I'm not trying to declare this is the true ranking correct over everyone on here's opinion)

1. Kennedy, Hynes, Metcalf
2/5. Katoa, Mulitalo, Tracey, Hiroti, Taumoepeau, Stonestreet*
3/4. Ramien, Tracey, Hiroti, Talakai, Wilton, Taumoepeau, (Metcalf maybe)
6. Hynes, Moylan, Trindall, Metcalf, Tracey, Graham, Rivett*
7. Hynes, Trindall, Metcalf, Tracey, Rivett* (Trindall a better "7" but Hynes a better player currently)
8/10. Finucane, Rudolf, Hamlin-Uele, Williams, Talakai, Hunt, Fifita, Pele, Calquhoun* (Wilton, McInnes can play prop but I don't think they ever get selected at prop)
9. Brailey, McInnes, (Trindall or Tracey maybe next?)
11/12. Graham, Nikora, Talakai, Wilton, Williams
13. McInnes, Finucane, Rudolf, Williams

*train and trial players or dev list

So half probably looks okay to me.

Prop is deep enough but could use a quality boost (around Talakai, Hunt level or better) - there are players who can get better enough to provide this boost themselves.

Centre asks a big question whether Fitz can turn Tracey into a dedicated centre or not, if he can't or doesn't want to then I think this is our most pressing need. Relies very quickly on forwards. Didn't include them as status for next season currently unknown but Ferris has an NRL game and Lualua was in 21 man and I think even named as 18 man at one stage so both of those guys may come into calculations. Lualua seemed to be preferred to JT. If one or both of those guys can come in and contest with Tracey/Hiroti for that 2/3 spot then we are potentially okay without buying anyone. If not them then I think buying another back may be required. I think Hannay and other staff can give Fitz a very good idea where Lualua and JT are at.

TBH a development contact hooker or depth hooker really wouldn't go astray either and edge is questionable if Graham can't make a full recovery so depth here also seems important (which could include just committing to it being Talakai's primary position)

Where's Jack Boyling sit in all that? Surely he gets a dev contract?

Pretty sure defence is a high on the list for every coach.

Train and trial would be my guess.

Dodgy info. I read what I wanted. He's free to talk after November 1 is all. Along with 200 others.

And likely all but wrapped up you'd think. It'd be weird for them to say he's the best in the biz and push his value up before locking him in
