That's what I thought too. Despite the bleating on here, Bird is nicely suited to fullback.
What makes you think that out of curiosity ? With the ball i could see the merit in it but without having seen his positioning behind the line or ability to defuse kicks its really hard to make any kind of argument for it at this stage. The likes of slater and brett stewart are worth just as much to their sides for points saved as points scored.

I really like Bird but he has done nothing to deserve fullback. The whole debate is ridiculous.

Guess the coaching staff see something there to at least be thinking about trialling him there. I'd be all for it if we didn't have the position sufficiently covered but we do. Lock was where i was hoping to see him play but if he's that against playing in the forwards than i guess he shouldn't be forced too. That leaves centre as the logical option in my opinion

He is dodgy under a kickoff, which is a integral part of being named as a sharks number 1, post peach.... If he wants to go and play fullback then let him, and we can sit back and see how it pans out..

I think it suits hia running game and his desire.to be involved. He demonstrated that his timing on the sweep is excellent both as a hole runner and a ball player. Physically, has enough pace and ithe size to carry the ball back. Also a good cover defender. Very talkative and reads the game well. Seems to be fit enough.

The kick reception stuff is important but can be learnt. Plus the Dragons would know what he offers, including Young and Hornby playing him at the back for a couple of games at the back end of his NYC season (and Hornby would be a good judge).

Thanks for the reply mate, wasn't aware he had games at the back in the nyc. If he wants fullback and they're offering it there's not much the sharks can do to keep him unfortunately.

Why move a player from his preferred position (at which he plays at SOO level) to accommodate a 1 year rookie

Dugan has been saying for a while now he wants to play centre, I guess he sees that as his best way of getting into the aussie team, if everyone is fit Slater gets the number one, if he is unavailable, GI is the next in line.

He's not going to cost a ****load at this point, so if it doesn't work out you can go after someone else later anyway.

Sometimes you should put faith in the players that you have and your system to develop them.

It's that far off that it doesn't really matter too much at the moment anyway. Anything could happen. 5 or 6 good hookers could arise in the meantime.

Well said

I thought St merge signed Kurt Mann to play fullback
Greedy ****s

Even if they signed him for centre? I don't see where they will fit Jack Bird in?

Between Dugan, Nightingale, Mann, Lafai, matautai/Aitken, Marshall, Widdop

How do you fit bird in?

Doubt that happens he loves it at the Dragons. Would be good to bring him over though.

Good kid from a quality family & the best is yet to come in his career.
would depend what their plans for bird were, if Marshall resigns they are in arent any halves spots, and even if he doesn't they have the nsw under 20s captain running round waiting for a crack. If bird plays fullback dugan and lafai end up in the centres pushing him out and if he's pushed wide he'll be wasted on the wing.

Regardless I hope we keep bird as he will probably end up being the better tallent anyway.
