Ben Barba has been sounded out about playing Rugby Sevens for Australia at the 2016 Olympics.
Barba was identified as a player of interest to union powerbrokers, who are in the process of assembling a team aiming for gold at Rio. While the Cronulla utility isn't anywhere near the form that earned him the Dally M medal at Canterbury in 2012, it is believed he could provide the Australian squad with the X-factor required to compete in the truncated version of the game.
Sin Bin can reveal Barba's younger brother, Marmin, was also targeted for a code switch, raising the prospect of the siblings linking together in the Sevens back-line.
There was interest from the Queensland Reds and overseas rugby when he was parting with the Broncos due to a belief he could excel in Sevens, where he would have fewer defenders and more space to show his attacking prowess.
Barba's focus is on recapturing his best form for the Sharks after failing to fire during his stint in Brisbane. The 25-year-old is currently being used as an impact weapon off the bench and is starting to show the form he is capable of.
There could be other former leaguies in the Olympic event, including Sonny Bill Williams and Israel Folau.
