HOBBLED FIFITA
The best player in the 2016 grand final and the man regarded at one time as the best front-rower in the game, Andrew Fifita, has revealed he is taking a huge risk by continuing to play football for the Sharks on a knee that should have him sitting in a rocking chair watching the football.
“I’m taking a massive risk by still playing,” Fifita said. “I’m well qualified to medically retire, but I am just not ready yet. That’s just me being really honest. My knee is that bad, but I am trying to get through and do the best I can do for the team.
‘‘I still love playing my footy and I want to keep playing as long as a I can. I know it’s doing damage to me, but I’ve got to keep going. I love my teammates and I want to keep getting on the field.
‘‘I suppose I need to change my lifestyle and my preparation for games. I’ve got to take extra care of my knee and how I do things during the week.
‘‘My problem is that I have one of the those shiny rings at home and now I want another one. That’s the worst thing about winning the comp, I’ve got the urge to win more. That’s what is driving me to get through the discomfort and pain that I have to deal with.’’
Fifita has also taken aim at his own club for allowing Josh Morris to leave. Fifita is a twin and understands Josh’s desire to finish his career with Brett at the Roosters, but he believes the Sharks have made the wrong call.
“I’d love to finish with my brother David, so I get it and I have got nothing against Josh,” Fifita said. “I think the club has got it wrong by letting him go. He is a giant loss. He has played for his state and his country. He is such a quality player. To give a player like him to the Roosters is hard to accept.”
Fifita has been speaking with his cousin David, who is off contact at the Broncos.
“I’ve told him that he has to make sure that in his next deal he doesn’t need all the pressure to be on his shoulders,’’ Fifita said. ‘‘He is only 20. He needs to be rewarded. I will ask him to come to the Sharks. He is getting bigger and bigger. He can take my spot in the middle and I will come off the bench. I have asked him to come and play with me at Tonga. He said he would if he is overlooked for the Kangaroos.’’
