I think the media will make a big deal about it.

The fact that he "turned his back" on Australia - there will be people out there that will want him banned from Origin as punishment. They will think that the decision on whether he plays or not shouldn't be up to him.

I personally don't see why you cant play for Tonga and NSW. Why do you have to eligible for to Australia to play Origin?

Tonga is a tier two nation. You can play for a tier two nation and play Origin. Plenty of players have done it.

He can, the issue is the mid season test of Tonga's clashes with origin so it's one or the other.

I get that players in the past have played for NSW, Australia and tier 2 nations.

But those guys have only played for the tier 2 nation AFTER they have missed out on Origin or Australian selection.

They've still been eligible to wear the green and gold, they've just haven't been picked.

Name a guy whose played origin in last few seasons who has been ineligible to play for Australia?

My understanding is that when you pledge your allegiance to NSW or QLD you have to also pledge your allegiance to Australia.

That's why I proposing a rule change, not just for Fifita but any young guy coming through the ranks - that you can play origin, but you dont have to play for Australia.

Tedesco played Origin in 2016 and 2017 and played for Italy in the last World Cup so that's obviously not the case.

Only because he wasn't picked for Australia - Andrew had 1 foot in the Aussie WC camp when he chose to play for Tonga.

If you wanna play Origin it basically means the Kangaroos get first dibs on you and if they don't want you you can play for a T2 nation if eligible.

Yep understand that. My interpretation of what Mr Ryan said was if you pledge your allegiance to Australia then you can't play for anyone else, which isn't the case as you pointed out.

Hb is correct. Origin is open to anyone who is eligible based on their rules (junior footy). As long as you arent a kiwi, english, or i guess its france?? Rep then you are eligible.

Fifita runs the risk of not being selected based on politics, not eligibility. Hos problem is the pacific test is in origin period so its 1 or the other

Someone just told me Fifita is pledging allegiance to Tonga full time, apparently was just on some podcast.

I can't seem to find confirmation anywhere though.

Good on him if true.

Better result for us, one less player to have out during Origin period, factor in no Maloney or Bird now then we might only have a few representatives, potentially only two in Holmes and Graham.

Can't see Moylan getting a go.
