Surely theres better reasons than this not to have a draft - the players misbehaving whilst away?? I think the players choosing where they want to be is a more logical reason.
A draft evens things out - look at NQ, Wests, Souths, now us - how long have we been poor for? If our recruitment continues it will be not only this year thats bad but next as well. The purpose of the draft is to improve the comp. I think fans can lose interest if their team is underperforming year after year. It gives us some hope of next year. Hypothetically - could you imagine if Sam Williams or hoppa were in the draft and coming our way - it would give us hope of a better football team.
The nrl is a privilege not a right of passage that players/player managers can choose. Skill should be determining the quality of a team not dollars. As it stands player managers can direct players to play in a lower tiered comp than play for a certain club. This has happened with us with one particular player last year. People may disagree but, when a player is deemed to be fg material and improve an nrl side therefore making a more competitive team, more competitive comp and chooses to play in a lower grade its not good.
My main reasoning for thinking a draft could improve the comp is to limit the ridiculous amounts of power player managers have over nrl clubs and it turn the comp, also to give teams and fans (such as us) a fighting chance to put a competitive football team on the park in the future.
I feel we are currently held to ransom by players and their managers.
The draft isnt going to give us more money, or make us play better! Better management is. And if you read the first line it says "You can chose where to work. So why shouldnt juniour sports stars have that same choice?" which is yes more a reason than the misbehaving point. Not to mention if they have sick family members etc which they may have to leave. They are people, not pieces of meat to be traded and told where to go.
