Very true
Salary caps and drafts were always designed to work in tandem and compliment each other. Unfortunatley for the NRL the draft was challenged and defeated in court and so will never come back.

Dont know the ins and outs but a draft is for all players not just rookies. This works in major competitions around the world and was how it started out here until Terry Hill challenged it and won when he got drafted to Wests or Easts, cant remember which one.

righto... being an nba fan, i know that that is only a rookie draft.

the afl allow free agents to join there draft, but im not sure the requirements of it, i am sure free agents can sign with other teams and dont need to be in a draft.

if the nrl was to think that a draft is the best possible way, surely it could be challeneged again?

He was drafted by Easts, but wanted to play at Wests under Ryan, hence the court action. If anyone is interested the first player drafted was a young bloke from Mittagong named Matty Cornwell.

I am not interested in a draft, would it even work in the nrl? we would lose our juniors to the draft aswell which would be crap.

That's the same scenario with every team mate. We may lose a gun, but may get a gun.

yeah but then we see the teams that dont produce players getting all of our talent which I really wouldn't be in favour of.

Righteo - I'll go first. Bad idea. It works great in North American sports because they have junior or University comps that are not affiliated with the senior clubs. A draft basically means a complete restructure of the way talent is identified, signed and developed. While the draft is a great way of ensuring parity in a sport with a junior structure to support it, we don't have the money in the game to be able to do this.

i dont reckon a draft i believe players (player managers) should do all contract negotiations post sept so they and their team mates can concentrate on the team they play for.....like the good ol days

Firstly, I don't want to receive players that don't want to be here.

Secondly, it can't happen, it's been beaten in a court case, so there is no point discussing it.

NEXT!!

Don't want a stupid ****ing draft. You can chose where to work. So why shouldnt juniour sports stars have that same choice? People talk about players misbehaving, so how about when the perth team starts (which it will when the game expands, lets face it, it is the most obvious and logical choice) lets draft juniours away from sydney, brisbane, melbourne, with out them having the choice, moving them away from their families and friends and then wonder why they misbehave? drinking more etc to try fit in and make more friends in an area they don't like?? PURE ****ING GENIUS!!

I live in melbourne and think the AFL draft is the biggest joke and unfair to AFL players. Lets face it, even in AFL the richer clubs are the teams that consistently do better, a draft isnt going to change that for us.

Surely theres better reasons than this not to have a draft - the players misbehaving whilst away?? I think the players choosing where they want to be is a more logical reason.

A draft evens things out - look at NQ, Wests, Souths, now us - how long have we been poor for? If our recruitment continues it will be not only this year thats bad but next as well. The purpose of the draft is to improve the comp. I think fans can lose interest if their team is underperforming year after year. It gives us some hope of next year. Hypothetically - could you imagine if Sam Williams or hoppa were in the draft and coming our way - it would give us hope of a better football team.

The nrl is a privilege not a right of passage that players/player managers can choose. Skill should be determining the quality of a team not dollars. As it stands player managers can direct players to play in a lower tiered comp than play for a certain club. This has happened with us with one particular player last year. People may disagree but, when a player is deemed to be fg material and improve an nrl side therefore making a more competitive team, more competitive comp and chooses to play in a lower grade its not good.

My main reasoning for thinking a draft could improve the comp is to limit the ridiculous amounts of power player managers have over nrl clubs and it turn the comp, also to give teams and fans (such as us) a fighting chance to put a competitive football team on the park in the future.

I feel we are currently held to ransom by players and their managers.
